Position Summary

This position is responsible for functioning as both a caregiver and care manager. In the caregiver role, the RN assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame implementing the Nursing Process. In the care manager role, the RN directs and oversees the work of other caregivers, including nurses and non-nurses, by delegating, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating patient care outcomes. This individual must possess a strong understanding of Patient Care Services and the ability to make sound judgments in various situations.

Essential Functions

• Perform assessment and data collection focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, and cognitive status.
• Implement care in a knowledgeable, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner following established procedures, policies, and care plans.
• Identify patient and significant other learning needs and implement patient teaching as outlined by policy and care plans.
• Document in patient charts through electronic medical records or paper processes in accordance with policies and regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to patient and family rights, ensuring equitable care regardless of race, age, religion, sex, national origin, or any other legally protected classification.
• Effectively delegate patient care activities and supervise assigned coworkers.
• Utilize sound critical thinking for organization and priority setting.
• Demonstrate appropriate use of lines of authority.
• May function as Charge Nurse, which includes delegating patient assignments, assisting with admissions and discharges, coordinating staff coverage, and leading unit activities.
• Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and affiliations to stay current in the field.
• Adhere to safety requirements, including security, understanding of MSDS, infection control, fire and disaster protocols, and safe body mechanics.
• Comply with organizational policies, procedures, and labor agreements.
• Engage courteously and efficiently with team members and support groups in alignment with organizational values.
• Maintain professionalism and ensure personal appearance meets the standards necessary for job performance.
• Handle additional responsibilities as required by management to meet organizational standards.

Work Environment

This position reports to the Nursing Department Director, House Supervisor, Charge Nurse, and other designated supervisory staff. The RN works closely with patients, physicians, and other clinicians to ensure optimal patient care and outcomes.

Education & Experience

• Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
• License: Current Washington State RN Licensure.
• Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Healthcare Provider Level) within 30 days of hire.
• Experience: Preferred experience as an acute care registered nurse; minimum one year of RN experience preferred for specialty nursing departments.
• Skills/Competencies:
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care for assigned patients.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to seek resources and perform independent problem-solving.
  • Demonstrate accountability while practicing within legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Manage crises effectively.
  • Competent in caring for patients across various age groups.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with department-specific equipment.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
• Capable of manual dexterity and light physical effort, able to lift/carry up to 30 lbs.
• Physical strength to perform CPR, lift and push/pull up to 300 lbs. with assistance.
• Ability to maintain keen mental faculties for assessing and making decisions on acutely ill patients.
• Good visual acuity for observing patient data and using documentation tools.
• Emotional stability to handle high-stress situations during patient care.
• Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to convey information accurately.
