Facility Overview

This facility is a 522-bed healthcare institution located in Montgomery, AL. It operates as a Level I Trauma Center, has a Level III NICU, and is recognized as a Primary Stroke Center. It is the largest trauma center within a 100-mile radius.

General Information

  • Number of Beds: 71
  • First-time Travelers: Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of experience with Cerner or EPIC systems, along with Level I or II Trauma experience. Candidates with 3+ years of Level III Trauma experience at a facility with 300+ beds will also be considered.
  • Experienced Travelers: Candidates must have at least 2 years of critical care experience (ICU, ER), with the most recent year in a Level I or II ER setting; Cerner or Epic experience is preferred.

Patient Population

Candidates will care for a diverse patient population, including:

  • Multi-System Trauma (Level I)
  • STEMI
  • Stroke
  • CHF (Congestive Heart Failure)
  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
  • GI (Gastrointestinal) issues
  • GU (Genitourinary) needs
  • OB/GYN
  • Pediatrics
  • Psychiatric emergencies

Patient Ratios

  • Emergency Room: 1:4
  • Medical Surgical Holds: 1:5
  • ICU Holds: 1:3

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Secure/CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention, nationally recognized and JCAHO accepted)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)

Skills Required

Candidates should possess proficiency in the following areas:

  • Trach care
  • Ventilator management
  • ICU drip care and maintenance
  • Chest tube management
  • Arterial line placement and care
  • Central venous line (CVL) care
  • PICC line and midline care
  • Port care
  • Foley catheter care
  • Application and care of splints or orthopedic devices
  • Bipap and high-flow oxygen therapy
  • Continuous bladder irrigation

Support on the Unit

  • CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) ratio: 1:12
  • Receptionist/HUC available
  • Charge Nurse available
  • Phlebotomy services available (up to 0300)
  • IV/Vascular Access Team available
  • Hospitalist support available
  • No telemetry monitoring tech

Technology and Equipment

  • EMR (Electronic Medical Record): Cerner
  • IV Pumps: Plum 360
  • Medication Dispensing: Omnicell
  • Monitors: Spacelabs

Orientation

New travelers and those returning after more than one year will undergo 24 hours of classroom training followed by 24 hours on the unit. Orientation for rehires will depend on the most recent date of employment.

Scheduling and Expectations

  • Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend or four weekend days per month on a block schedule
