Facility Overview

This is a 388-bed hospital that serves as a Level 3 Trauma Center.

Unit Information

• 12 beds
• 3 Operating Rooms (ORs)
• 2 OB Emergency Room rooms

Patient Types

The unit cares for both high-risk and low-risk ante-partum and intra-partum pregnant women, providing immediate postpartum care and stabilization of normal newborns. Couplet care is also offered.

Patient Ratios

• 1:1 ratio for high-risk patients
• Generally a 1:2 ratio for normal cases

Guidelines

The unit follows AWHONN (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) guidelines.

Required Licensure & Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
• CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) for surgical scrub

Essential Skills

• IUPC (Intrauterine Pressure Catheter)
• FSE (Fetal Scalp Electrode)
• IV starts
• Circulating during C-sections

Unit Support

• No CNAs; an OBT scrub assists with vaginal delivery recoveries
• Receptionist/HUC available 24/7
• Charge nurse available 24/7
• RNs perform phlebotomy when needed, with lab available as necessary
• IV/VAT Team available if required
• RT (Respiratory Therapy) support available with NICU
• Hospitalist support available
• Telemetry monitoring available for EFM and cardiac telemetry

Technology and Equipment

• EMR: EPIC
• IV pumps: Baxter
• Medication dispensing system: Pyxis
• Fetal monitoring systems: GE/Centricity, Phillips EFM/tele

Floating Opportunities

Staff may float to postpartum and NICU for level 2 newborns as needed.

Orientation and Scheduling

Orientation typically lasts 2-3 shifts, depending on the RN's competency and comfort level.

• Weekend rotation: Every other weekend
• Holiday expectations: One holiday
• Shift times: 1900-0730 and 0700-1930
• Weekly schedule cycle: Sunday - Saturday
