Unit Information

The Pediatric Step-Down Unit cares for patients requiring a higher level of monitoring and support than a general pediatric floor can provide.

• Number of Beds: 36 private rooms with accommodations for parents.
• Staffing: Approximately 60 staff members, including charge nurses, Patient Care Technicians (PCTs), and Clinical Nurse Coordinators.
• Patient Ratios: The unit has a mix of step-down patients and basic care patients, with ratios of 1:3 for step-down and 1:4 for basic care.
• Type of Equipment: Phillips Monitors
• EMR System: Meditech

Qualifications

Required Skills:

• Minimum 1 year of current Pediatric RN experience.
• Current certification in BLS and NRP.
• Comfortable working with high flow oxygen, spinal fusions, chest tubes.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with Meditech is highly desirable.

Typical Procedures

Staff may perform a variety of procedures, including but not limited to:

• Nasogastric Tubes (NGTs)
• Foley Catheters
• TP Tubes
• Peripheral Intravenous Catheters (PIVs)
• Phlebotomy (using the AccuVein device)
• Occasional Lumbar Punctures (LPs)

Scheduling

Flexibility in scheduling is a priority, and travelers are welcomed to engage in discussions about their preferred schedules. The department strives to accommodate requests proactively rather than simply filling open shifts.

Additional Information

On-site parking is available free of charge, conveniently connected to the unit. New travelers should be prepared to work night shifts, as first-time travelers will not be placed on day shifts. We care for a diverse patient population, excluding trauma and burn cases, which enriches the clinical experience here.
