Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

Location: Wichita, KS

Unit Type: Delivery Room

Number of Beds: 26

Number of Staff: 112

Staffing Breakdown:

  • Day Shift: 1 Charge Nurse (CNC), 14 Nurses, 2-3 Surgical Technologists, 2 Unit Clerks
  • Night Shift: 1 Charge Nurse (CNC), 12 Nurses, 2 Surgical Technologists, 1 Unit Clerk

Patient Ratios:

  • 1:1 for high-risk labor and cesarean sections
  • 1:2 for antepartum, PPROM, PTL on magnesium sulfate, and postpartum on magnesium sulfate
  • 1:3 for postpartum magnesium with no baby and outpatient cases

Type of Equipment: Alaris pumps, PCA pumps, Monica Novii telemetry, CPN (GE) monitors

EMR System: Meditech / CPN

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Minimum one year of current hospital Labor and Delivery RN experience
  • Current BLS, ACLS, NRP, and EFM-C or AWHONN certifications

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with circulating cesarean sections
  • Experience in high-risk Labor and Delivery

Unit Procedures

Typical procedures performed on the unit include:

  • Cesarean sections and inductions
  • Amniotomy (AROM)
  • Intrauterine Pressure Catheter (IUPC)
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (DFM and Doppler)

Work Environment

Our unit prides itself on a collaborative environment and team nursing approach, which encourages staff members to support one another in providing excellent patient care. Self-scheduling is promoted, contributing to high staff satisfaction. The team comprises many experienced nurses, with tenures ranging from 20 to 40 years, enhancing the supportive atmosphere.

A new OB Hospitalist program is in place, providing valuable support for the residency program and enhancing the resources available to nurses working triage.
