Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) to join our team. This position requires a strong background in high-acuity obstetric care, labor management, and delivery of high-risk patients.
General Information
- L&D Beds: 34 (15 labor rooms, 12 antepartum, 4 OB ED, 3 OR)
- Postpartum Beds: 18
- Deliveries: Up to 300 per month
Patient Types
The nurse will care for patients with various conditions, including:
- Hypertension
- Magnesium administration
- C-sections (33% rate)
- Preterm labor
- Insulin drips (rarely)
- Vaginal deliveries
- Epidurals and inductions
- Robust antepartum care
- Premature rupture of membranes (PROM)
- Multiple births
- Postpartum hemorrhage
Patient Ratios
- 1:1 for active labor
- 1:2 for non-active laboring
- 1:2-3 for antepartum, based on acuity
Required Certifications
- BLS
- NRP
- Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (AWHONN)
Skills Required
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in high-acuity labor management
- The ability to triage obstetric patients
- Experience circulating in the OR
- Proficiency in cervical checks and fetal monitoring strip interpretation
- Ability to assist with the care of newborns post-delivery
Support on the Unit
- 1 CNA to assist with transports, restocking, and cleanup
- Available scrub techs who are LPNs and NRP certified
- Receptionist/Health Unit Coordinator available
- Free-floating charge nurse
- Phlebotomy support
- Break nurses scheduled for each shift
- Respiratory therapy available 24/7
- Laborist services available 24/7
- Support from residents/fellows and additional physicians/midwives
Technology and Equipment
- EMR: EPIC required
- IV pumps: Alaris CareFusion
- Medication dispensing system: Pyxis
- Fetal Surveillance Monitors: Centricity/Qx
- Epidural Pumps: CAD Solaris
- Panda Warmers
- Coviden Sequential Compression Devices (SCDs)
Orientation
The orientation process consists of:
- Hospital orientation plus 2 weeks on the unit and 1 week independently
- 6 shifts of unit orientation for Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM)
Scheduling
- Weekend rotation: Every other weekend, though this can vary based on needs
- Shift times: 0700-1930, 1900-0730 for RNs; 1900-0700 for ANMs
- Schedule released 2 weeks prior to the start date
- No mandatory call requirements for RNs
- Holidays: Expected, and fair distribution among staff
