General Information

Location: Tacoma, WA

Type: Level II Trauma Center with a Level IV NICU

Inpatient Capacity: 60 beds (including 21 Inpatient Holding, 2 Psych Rooms, and 14 Hall Spaces)

Average Daily Patient Volume: 140-150 patients

Experience Required: 1 year of strong Emergency Department experience

EPIC Experience: Required

Patient Types

• Pediatrics to geriatrics
• Trauma cases, including gunshot wounds (GSW)
• Sepsis, COVID-19, STEMI, Stroke, DKA
• Mental health emergencies
• Respiratory issues, chest pain, and Adult Psych cases

This facility is a high acuity receiving center.

Patient Ratios

• Standard ratio of 1:4
• Can flex to 1:5 for low acuity patients

Required Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
• National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or Management of Assaultive Behavior (MOAB)
• Traveler Competency Exam

Skills Required

• General Emergency Department experience
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Intravenous (IV) skills
• Basic knowledge of drips and medication administration
• Procedural sedation and blood administration
• Cardiac medication experience

Support on the Unit

• Emergency Room Technician: assists with glucose checks and splinting
• Charge Nurse: rarely takes on assignments
• Resource/Float Nurse: pending staffing levels
• Respiratory Therapist: available 24/7
• ED Educator: provides ongoing training
• Security: present 24/7 for safety
• House Supervisor: available 24/7
• Pharmacy: available 24/7, assists during codes

Charting System and Equipment

• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Epic
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing System: Pyxis
• Telemetry Monitoring: Central and bedside telemetry at the nursing station (no telemetry technician)

Orientation

• 1st Day: New Employee Orientation (NEO) including badge issuance and Epic training if necessary, meeting with educator
• 3-4 twelve-hour shifts with a preceptor on assigned shift
• Traveler Telemetry Competency Required: must complete and pass prior to starting

Scheduling

• Shifts Available:
  • Day: 0700-1900, 0900-2100
  • Mids: 1100-2300, 1300-0100
  • Eve/Night: 1500-0300, 1900-0700
• Shift Swapping: Day/Mid or Night/Mid shifts may switch during a contract but remain consistent for a 6-week block.
• Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend
• Time Off: Up to 5 days available
• Holiday Expectations: Must work 3 of the 5 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day)
