Required Qualifications

  • Illinois RN license required to submit
  • Certifications: BLS, NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), and AWHONN intermediate or advanced
  • One year of experience, with Labor and Delivery experience required

Preferred

  • LDRP experience (ideal to have both L&D and LDRP skills)

Unit Details

  • Department: Labor and Delivery
  • Beds: 7 L&D beds, 2 triage beds, 7 postpartum beds
  • OR: 1 OR suite on the unit for C-Sections. The OR circulates and recovers patients, and nurses stabilize babies and provide couplet care after recovery. Nurses also care for clean gyn patients such as hysterectomies (vaginal and abdominal).
  • Volume: About 255 births annually
  • Ratios: Follows AWHONN guidelines
  • Common diagnoses: Labor, preeclampsia, HTN, obesity, gestational diabetes, and preterm labor (GA 32 weeks/1500 grams; anything less is transferred). Babies may be on oxygen for up to 6 hours. If not improving or needing more support, they are transferred out.
  • Titratable drips: Pitocin and insulin. RNs are required to titrate drips.
  • Support staff: Charge nurse/rounder takes a full assignment with lower acuity. Two day-shift unit secretaries/CNAs handle clerical work, helping on the unit, and phlebotomy.
  • Coverage: OB hospitalists are in house 24/7, with one local OB within 5 minutes. Neonatology is not in house. Anesthesia is in house for M-F day shift and within 30 minutes at other times. RT equipment is available, and RT attends if complications arise.
  • Telemetry: Telemetry needs are covered by remote monitoring, and a tech from the Telemetry unit reads the strips. Nurses do not read strips.

  • Staffing: Self-staffed unit. A scheduling committee of unit staff creates the schedule with leadership approval.
  • Weekends: Every other to every third weekend
  • Holidays: Half of holidays, switching each year
  • On-call: Required when leave or vacation coverage is needed. Equates to 1-2 12-hour shifts per 6-week period, which can be split into 4-hour blocks, with a 30-minute callback time.
  • Floating: Only in critical need. May float to MS (Med-Surg) as helping hands or sitter, but would not take a full patient assignment.
  • Orientation: Department-specific orientation, up to 3 shifts
  • Attire: Hospital-provided scrubs; waterproof non-slip shoes
  • Prior employment: Travelers with previous employment at any facility location in the system must disclose it on their resume or elsewhere in the submission for a DNU check.

Pros

Mikayla was great to work with. She guided me the whole way through the credentialing process, told me what to expect, and was responsive anytime I had questions. I would recommend Mikayla as a recruiter and would work with her in the future.

Cons

No cons in working with Mikayla at all.
