Traveling ER RN

Location: College Station, Texas (Southern Texas) Contract Length: 13 weeks Start: ASAP Shift: Day and evening, 12-hour shifts (36 hours per week) Start Time: 11 AM Weekends: Every other weekend Holidays: Worked in rotation with permanent staff Call/Standby: None Scheduling: Matrix; the facility tries to accommodate traveler needs Scrubs: Navy undershirts required; navy scrub jackets optional

Required Qualifications

• Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC certifications
• NIHSS listed among certifications in the additional information
• 2 years of experience (ER)
• Must pass the Advanced Dysrhythmia exam (83% required) before signing the contract; three attempts allowed
• Copy of driver's license required at submittal to validate legal name; credentialing profile must match the government-issued ID name with no middle initial or middle name
• Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any facility in the same health system within the past year. Candidates who worked PRN through outside firms will be considered.

• First-time travelers are accepted.
• Call-outs are strongly discouraged and could lead to termination.
• May be asked to precept as needed by the unit.
• Facility prefers travelers who extend.

Facility and Unit Details

• Trauma/STEMI/Stroke: Level III trauma center; receives STEMI and stroke patients
• Beds: 18 total, including 4 critical rooms used for trauma or codes
• Fast Track: 6 beds
• Triage: Separate triage area; travelers may staff triage
• Holds: Intermixed within the ER; ER nurses care for holds
• Psych/Seclusion: 1 room
• Security: In-house 24/7, rounds in the ER
• Volume: About 70 patients per day
• Ratio: 1:3–4 depending on acuity
• Patient mix: Cardiac, STEMIs, strokes, some trauma (multisystem trauma transferred out), and general ER (abdominal pain, respiratory, GI, etc.). A pediatric-only hospital in the area admits peds and receives transfers when needed.
• Drips: All common ER drips, including pressors and sedation
• Physicians: MD in house 24/7 plus 2 mid-levels staggered during busy times
• Charge nurse: Generally patient-free
• Support staff: 2 PCTs per shift, who may occasionally be pulled to sit with patients
• Respiratory therapy: RT in the ER 24/7; RT performs ABGs, breathing treatments, and runs vents. RNs do EKGs and troubleshoot equipment (vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow, nasal cannula).
• Monitoring: No monitor techs; RNs read and interpret their own strips
• Imaging: X-ray and CT nearby; staff help with transport
• Phlebotomy: Phlebotomy draws labs
• Psych placement: RNs are not responsible for psych placement; someone screens and arranges placement if inpatient criteria are met
• EMR: Epic

Orientation and Float

• Orientation: 1–3 shifts depending on experience, with a checkoff packet reviewed with a preceptor
• Float: First to float between this campus and another campus 16 minutes away, as needed
