Description

Telemetry RN - 2 South

Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia

Contract Length: 13 weeks

Shift: Nights, 12-hour shifts (7a-7:30p or 7p-7:30a), 48 hours per week

Unit Details

  • Unit: 2 South, 2nd floor, 20 beds, all private rooms
  • Currently telemetry only. Stepdown is not applicable at this time, and no return date has been given.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 for telemetry patients
  • 2 PCTs staff the 20 beds. PCT duties include ambulation, fingerstick blood sugars, vital signs, bathing, I&O documentation, feeding, and turning. PCTs share q2h rounding with nurses.
  • Typical patients: telemetry, post-catheterization, medical/surgical with telemetry monitoring needs, and respiratory difficulty
  • Daily volume is variable, from 1-2 admissions and discharges to as many as 10.
  • Cardiac monitoring: 10 rooms have hardwired monitors, and the rest are portable telemetry-capable. Monitor techs are on the 6th floor and call the assigned nurse about issues they see. Nurses must understand basic dysrhythmias and verify telemetry strip interpretation.
  • Pharmacy: A unit-based pharmacist works 7a-3p, 5 days a week. The main pharmacy covers 24/7. Nurses reconstitute antibiotics, and telemetry patients may be on heparin titration.
  • Respiratory therapy is in the building 24/7. Nurses may give nebulizers, but RT is nearly always available. No ventilators are on the unit.
  • At least one covering hospitalist is available 24/7.
  • Venous access: Nurses place IVs and draw labs from central lines only when ordered. There are no other IV requirements.
  • Point-of-care testing: Blood sugar checks use an AccuChek glucometer. Unit managers complete competency and send it for access.
  • A designated charge nurse is assigned. Under full staffing, the charge nurse is out of staffing to support the unit.
  • Travelers may be asked to precept or charge when needs cannot be covered. This is discussed first, and the traveler's comfort level is respected.

Required Qualifications

  • ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), and NIHSS
  • Valid driver's license, disclosed at submission
  • 5 years of experience as an RN
  • At least 1 year of travel experience required

  • Driver's license address must be more than 50 miles from the facility
  • Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years.
  • Previous travelers who worked there for 1 full year must have been gone for 2 years.
  • Travel teams must be submitted together in one email.
  • Only 2 candidates may be submitted per opening. If the position is at its maximum, the submission is held until a spot opens.
  • Any license hits must be disclosed at submission.

Scheduling and Float

  • Hired for day or night shift. Extra shifts may be picked up, but RNs will not be made to work a different shift.
  • Block scheduling is available based on unit needs. Travelers may self-schedule.
  • No on-call.
  • Every other weekend is required. Day shift works Saturday/Sunday, and night shift works Friday/Saturday.
  • Every other holiday is required: Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's.
  • Floating may occur to a comparable or lower-level unit (telemetry or med/surg). Staff are occasionally pulled to help with admitted boarded patients in the emergency department or telemetry patients housed in the ICU.
  • Call-offs go through the hospital supervisor at least 2 hours before the shift starts.

Orientation

  • Day 1 is a mix of required education modules and shadowing. Report to the corporate center for a badge and parking pass, then to the main campus 2nd floor.
