Job Description
Under immediate to general supervision, provides technical assistance as a surgical (scrub) technician in operating rooms, labor and delivery, or other surgical procedure areas.
Essential Responsibilities
- Use Physician’s preference cards to prepare the operating room for surgery.
- Prepare sterile fields by opening instruments and supplies using sterile technique.
- Perform surgical scrub prior to patient entering the room.
- Assist in draping the patient and preparing the operative field.
- Preserve and correctly identify operative specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Obtain and ensure special equipment (e.g., electrosurgical machines, diagnostic lights) is functional.
- Manipulate instruments to aid surgeon efficiency and patient safety.
- Observe surgery progress and provide additional instruments or supplies as needed.
- Recognize and correct breaks in sterile technique.
- Participate in sponge, needle, and instrument counts as directed.
- Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and operating room areas; dispose of soiled linen.
- Assist in training other surgical technicians.
- May perform clerical and direct patient care activities if assigned to Labor and Delivery.
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Required Qualifications
Education
- Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technician program OR
- 6 months of scrub tech experience may substitute for formal training.
Certifications & Licensure
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
Experience
- Minimum of 6 months scrub tech experience if not formally trained (implied by education substitution).
- No explicit years of specialty experience stated beyond education/experience substitution.
Skills & Knowledge
- Knowledge of basic human anatomy and first-aid methods.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to provide age-appropriate care across the lifespan (neonate to geriatric).
- Ability to interpret patient data relevant to age-specific needs.
