Job Description
A Certified Surgical First Assistant provides skilled assistance to a surgeon during surgical operations. Responsibilities include:
- Hands-on tasks such as exposure, hemostasis, and suturing under surgeon supervision
- Experience preferred in vein harvesting, robotic thoracic cases, and vascular assistance
Required Credentials & Compliance
Professional Credentials
- Current professional license with primary source verification within 30 days prior to assignment start
- Resume/Profile submission required
- At least two professional references prior to first assignment
- Criminal background check including Social Security Trace, Employment Verification, OIG Search, National Sex Offender Registry (updated annually)
- Employment verification for the past seven years (updated annually)
- Education verification relevant to clinical work (completed within 90 days of start)
- Completion of specialty and core competency exams with minimum 80% passing score (updated every 3 years for specialty, annually for core competencies)
- Completion of onboarding education attestation modules prior to clearance
- Skills checklist completed within one year of start and updated annually
Certifications
- BLS (American Heart Association) required before onboarding
Personal Health Requirements
- Proof of immunity or vaccination for:
- MMR (two doses or positive titer; no declinations accepted)
- Varicella (two doses or serological evidence; no declinations accepted)
- Hepatitis B vaccination series completion or signed declination
- Influenza vaccine during flu season (October 1 through March 31); exemptions accepted with mask requirement
- Tdap valid within 10 years (no declinations accepted)
- Tuberculosis screening:
- 2-step PPD or Negative IGRA within required timeframes
- If positive, negative chest X-ray within one year and annual TB questionnaire
- Fit test for respiratory protection (updated annually)
- 12-panel drug screen within 30 days prior to start and annually thereafter
- Statement of good health or completed physical exam prior to first assignment, updated annually
Identification
- Valid Driver’s License or State ID matching address on file (not expired)
Additional Notes
- All required documentation must be current and compliant prior to assignment start
- Some credentials require updates annually or upon break in service longer than 90 days
- Masking required if influenza vaccine is declined during flu season
