Job Description
- Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments of ALS patients, considering disease stage, weight trends, respiratory function, and swallowing ability.
- Develop and implement individualized nutrition care plans, including oral intake, enteral feeding, and supplements.
- Monitor and adjust nutrition plans in coordination with disease progression and patient needs.
- Collaborate with neurologists, speech-language pathologists, respiratory therapists, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare providers as part of an interdisciplinary ALS team.
- Provide education and counseling to patients and caregivers on nutrition, hydration, and feeding tube management.
- Document nutrition interventions and progress in the electronic medical record system.
- Participate in team case conferences and contribute to care planning and clinical decision-making.
- Stay current with ALS nutrition guidelines and research.
- Assist in developing clinic protocols and patient education materials.
- Support clinical research, data collection, and quality improvement projects related to ALS nutrition as applicable.
Required Credentials & Certifications
- License: Active Louisiana license from the Board of Examiners in Dietetics and Nutrition for Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (Primary Source Verification within 30 days of start).
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA or ARC only.
- Professional Verification: Education verification and background checks including criminal background, employment, and driving record.
- Resume: Required for submission.
- Photo: Forward-facing, well-lit, neutral background JPEG photo required.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- COVID-19 Vaccine (optional; proof or exemption accepted).
- MMR: Proof of 2 immunizations, positive titer, or declination with signed statement.
- Hepatitis B: Proof of 3 immunizations, positive titer, or declination with required approvals.
- Influenza Vaccine: Required during flu season (medical/religious exemptions accepted with documentation).
- TB Test: Negative QuantiFERON blood test within 1 year or 2-step skin test; if positive, must provide clearance or treatment proof.
- Varicella: Proof of 2 immunizations, positive titer, or declination with signed statement.
- Tdap: Proof of vaccination within past 10 years or declination with approvals.
- Annual TB Questionnaire: Required within 6 months of start; if positive, documentation of evaluation and treatment completion required.
- Health Statement: Signed and dated within 1 year confirming ability to work without restrictions.
- Fit Test: N95 mask fit test (3M 1860, 1860s, or 1870+) within 1 year prior to start; updated annually.
- Eye Exam & Color Vision: Ishihara Color Test and Snellen Vision test within 1 year prior to start.
Skills & Competency Requirements
- Skills Checklist: Unit-specific checklist within 1 year prior to start; updated annually.
- Competency Exam: Passing score of 80% or higher on required exams within 1 year prior to start.
- Core Competencies: Current within 1 year prior to start with passing score of 80% or higher; includes HIPAA, Patient Bill of Rights, Safety Orientation, Bloodborne Pathogens, Fire Safety, Infection Control, Elder Abuse and Neglect, Age-Specific Care, Cultural Diversity, Advance Directives; renewed annually.
- Drug Screen: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days prior to start.
This position requires a dedicated Clinical Dietitian with specialized experience in ALS patient care, strong interdisciplinary collaboration skills, and compliance with comprehensive credentialing and health requirements.
