Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Pediatric Critical Care Float Pool)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Position: Pediatric Critical Care float pool RN
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 PM - 7:30 AM), totaling 36 hours/week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend plus holiday rotation
  • Patient Ratios: 1:2 or 1:3
  • Float Requirement: RN will float within scope to all Pediatric units in the hospital (CVPICU, NICU, PICU)
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years Pediatric ICU experience
  • First-time travelers accepted if experience requirements are met
  • License Required: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
  • Certifications Required: BLS, PALS (American Heart Association only)
  • Preferred Experience: ECMO, CRRT
  • Block Schedule: Possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Local Radius: 60 miles; locals accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Hurricane Season Notice: Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June-November, peak in August-September). Confirm availability accordingly.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA certification required
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): AHA certification required for all pediatric units
  • South Carolina RN License or Compact License: Primary source verification required; walk-through/temp license option available for eligible candidates
  • Additional Preferred Certifications: ACLS (not required for pediatric units), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course, not required for ER RNs)
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
  • Other Certifications: Medication/Pharmacology competency exam, color blindness testing, competency exams as applicable

Experience & Competencies

  • Minimum 2 years Pediatric ICU experience required
  • ECMO and CRRT experience preferred
  • Must be able to float to multiple pediatric critical care units
  • Medication and pharmacology competency exams required
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start
  • Competency exams required, with pediatric OR competency preferred if applicable

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask (specific models required), renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required or proof of immunity for:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or vaccination series)
    • Varicella (chickenpox)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Aug-April), with medical/religious exemptions accepted (no declinations)
  • Sterile Processing Techs have additional lab and physical assessment requirements

Background & Documentation

  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including:
    • SSN trace
    • Statewide and national criminal checks
    • Sex offender registry
    • FACIS 3 and international searches if applicable
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated with contract renewals
  • Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
  • Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers required
  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Complete employment application including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Facility-specific documents including photo for badge (passport-style, business casual attire, no posing)
  • Orientation modules must be completed prior to start (approx. 2 hours)

Additional Notes

  • Travelers must upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into the facility’s system prior to start
  • All certifications must be valid and not expire within 30 days of assignment start date
  • Radiation badge required for certain specialties (not applicable for this RN role unless specified)
  • Facility may call off shifts but guarantees minimum hours as noted
  • All requests for time off must be submitted at time of application and are subject to unit approval

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized pediatric critical care environment with a supportive float pool structure, requiring strong pediatric ICU experience and certifications.
