Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract) - Columbus, Ohio

Job Overview

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse

  • Contract Length: 16 weeks (approximately 4 months)
  • Shift: Nights, with weekend shifts varying based on unit requirements
  • Unit: Corrections Health Unit (PCU and Oncology Medical-Surgical units)
  • Environment: Secure corrections unit for inmates, locked with access controlled by Corrections Officers (CO)
  • Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • PCU: 1:3
    • Medical-Surgical (MS): 1:4-5
  • Corrections Officer to Inmate Ratio: 1:2

Experience & Skills

  • Preferred: Oncology experience (not required)
  • Required: EPIC charting experience
  • Float to various Oncology Medical-Surgical units as needed
  • Ensure staff safety in a secure corrections environment

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP, NIH Stroke Certification)

Patient Care & Clinical Skills

  • Care for patients with active oncology diagnoses/treatments (solid tumors, hematology) and oncology workup admissions
  • Manage patients with history of cancer admitted for other reasons (surgical procedures, COPD, sepsis, pneumonia, etc.)
  • Manage non-oncology diagnoses as needed
  • Medical-Surgical and telemetry nursing skills required

Clinical Competencies Include:

  • Cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation
  • Unit-based telemetry monitoring
  • IV insulin protocols
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Pre/Post hemodialysis and renal failure management
  • IV therapy and phlebotomy (blood product administration, central/peripheral line care, PICC line management, starting IVs)
  • Medication management including heparin protocols, cardiac drips (no titration), PCA
  • Respiratory care including CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy management

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting
  • Background checks monitored monthly (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG)
  • Education accreditation verification required (accredited nursing program)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire
    • MMR (Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella) vaccines or positive titers
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination (mask required if declined during flu season)
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but recommended

Additional Requirements

  • 2 professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
  • Unit-specific competency exams including medication and dysrhythmia/EKG competency exams (EKG exam required annually for most RNs)
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgement annually
  • Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment
  • Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and annually
  • Fingerprinting must be completed using specific codes and within 1 year of start; new fingerprinting required if break in service exceeds 90 days
