Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Opportunity

Location: Columbus, Ohio

Job Description

  • Assignment in a comprehensive cancer center with 318 acute care beds, specializing in cancer diagnosis.
  • Floating between MedSurg and PCU Oncology units including:
    • Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)
    • Acute Leukemia
    • Hematology
    • Medical Oncology
    • PCU Oncology
    • Gynecological Oncology
    • Urology
    • Colorectal
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Corrections Healthcare
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.
  • Shifts primarily nights with day/night rotating shifts available.
  • Staffing ratios:
    • PCU: 1:3 (can be 1:4 with mixed acuity)
    • MedSurg Tele: ideally 1:4, can be 1:5
  • Weekend shifts variable based on unit needs.
  • No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests are submitted and balanced before final schedule posting.
  • Orientation:
    • First week: Monday-Friday day shift orientation
    • Weeks 2-3: Five bedside orientation shifts
    • Then independent practice

Requirements

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in high acuity PCU level or higher.
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required.

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Compliance & Background Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and MVR if driving is required.
  • FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start, with specific Ohio codes for healthcare.
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
  • Education accreditation verification from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, CASN).
  • Transcript or diploma verification required.
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12).
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required annually in lieu of test.
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer; boosters required if low titer.
  • Hepatitis B: titer or 3-vaccine series; declination accepted.
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions reviewed.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene).
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31); decliners must wear a mask.
  • COVID-19 vaccine not required but strongly recommended.

Competencies & Exams

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exams required.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for all RNs within 1 year of start (with some unit exceptions); must be updated annually.
  • Remediation process in place for failed EKG exams with up to three attempts.

Additional Requirements

  • 2 professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.
  • Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement.
  • License verification within 30 days of start.
  • NURSYS verification for RNs.

Facility Policies

  • Dress code and hand hygiene policy must be reviewed and signed.
  • Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse reporting training and acknowledgment required annually.
  • Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and signed annually.
