Registered Nurse (Stepdown ICU RN) - Travel/Contract Position

Location: Orangeburg, South Carolina

Position Details

  • Specialty: Stepdown ICU RN
  • Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
  • Patient Ratio: 1:4
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: No
  • Floating: Yes, within scope to like units/sister facilities
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Experience & Licensing Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 1 year required, 2 years preferred
  • First-timers: Accepted
  • License: South Carolina RN license or Compact license required before start
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Certifications Preferred:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention)
  • Special Skills:
    • Epic electronic health record experience required
    • Telemetry competency required
    • Cardiac telemetry experience required
    • Previous charge nurse experience preferred
    • Community hospital experience preferred

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Block Schedule: May request approval prior to assignment (not guaranteed)
  • Local Candidates: Accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Local Radius: 60 miles

  • Charting System: Epic
  • Scrub Color: Royal Blue
  • Parking: Free
  • Orientation:
    • Completion of OurDay modules required before start (4-6 hours estimated)
    • First Day Instructions (FDI) provided after clearance
    • COVID and Flu vaccine documentation must be uploaded into OurDay
    • Passport-style badge photo required before start

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering last 7 years
    • SSN Trace, Statewide, National Criminal, Sex Offender Registry, FACIS 3
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification: Required (diploma/transcripts accepted as placeholder)
  • Licensure Verification:
    • Primary source verification of active, unencumbered SC RN license
    • NURSYS verification required
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers
  • Photo for Badge: Clear, frontal passport-style photo with solid light background
  • Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology and competency exams required
  • Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
  • Radiation Badge: Required only if assigned to specific units (e.g., CVOR, Cath Lab)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit Mask Test: Conducted onsite during orientation
  • Vaccinations:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form required
    • COVID-19 vaccine highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season or medical/religious exemption accepted (no declinations)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters may be needed for low titers
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
  • TB Testing: Negative T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days of start; annual TB questionnaire required
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Respirator Clearance: Annual medical clearance required for respirator use

Additional Notes

  • Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June-November), especially August and September.
  • All required certifications must be valid beyond 30 days from start date; expiring certifications must be renewed or scheduled for renewal before start.
  • Facility-specific job description must be signed prior to start.
  • Sterile Processing Techs have additional physical assessment and lab requirements due to chemical exposure.

This position is suitable for RNs with telemetry and Epic experience seeking a night shift travel assignment in a community hospital setting with a supportive orientation and comprehensive compliance requirements.
