Description

MedSurg/Infectious Disease Nurse Opportunity

Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Unit: 1E MedSurg/Infectious Disease (Cost Center 15)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Details

  • Beds: 18 private rooms (all due to Infectious Diseases)
  • Patient Types: Infectious diseases including COVID, MRSA, C-Diff, isolation patients
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • Typical: 1:5-6
    • If COVID patients: 1:4
    • Usually staffed with 3-4 RNs per shift
  • Nurse Aids: 2 CNAs per shift
  • Respiratory Equipment: No vents; patients may be on CPAP, BiPAP, or High Flow managed by RT
  • Telemetry: Remote telemetry monitored from another floor; RNs do not interpret strips

Certifications & Experience

  • Required Certification: BLS (AHA) only
  • Experience: Strong knowledge in MedSurg, Infectious Disease, and Isolation precautions required
  • IV Drips: No cardiac drips; common drips include Heparin and typical MedSurg IV medications and antibiotics
  • Titration: RNs are not required to titrate cardiac drips

Scheduling & Shifts

  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
    • Day: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM (includes 30-minute lunch)
    • Night: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM (includes 30-minute lunch)
  • Scheduling:
    • Permanent staff self-schedule
    • Travelers scheduled as needed, block scheduling allowed if unit needs are met
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
    • Night weekends: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
    • Day weekends: Saturday, Sunday
  • Holiday Requirement: Based on unit needs; travelers may be expected to work holidays if permanent staff coverage is insufficient
  • Call/Standby: May be called off for low census depending on contract specifics

Additional Information

  • Floating: Travelers float first; floating required to any MedSurg units. If floated to Tele, assignments will be within skillset
  • Dress Code: Royal blue scrubs required; scrub jackets allowed only if royal blue scrub jackets (no hoodies or sweatshirts)
  • Orientation:
    • 1 day EPIC orientation
    • 1 day floor orientation with preceptor
    • 3rd day working independently
  • Travel Experience: Required
  • Submittal Requirement: Must include an unexpired copy of candidate’s driver’s license

Charge Nurse & Supervision

  • Charge Nurse available 24/7
  • Day charge nurse may take patients if necessary
  • Night charge nurse always takes a full patient assignment
