Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Lafayette, Louisiana
Specialty: Registered Nurse (Med/Surg, Post-Op GI and Wound Care)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Acute care Med/Surg position specializing in post-op GI and wound care.
  • Must have full-time post-op unit experience.
  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience required.
  • At least one completed travel contract required.
  • Patient diagnoses include pancreatitis, GI bleeds, bowel obstructions/perforations, wound and post-op infections, mass removal, esophageal perforation, gunshot wounds, motor vehicle collisions, diverticulitis.
  • Special procedures experience required: pancreatectomy, esophagectomy, Whipple, spleenectomy, adrenalectomy, cystectomy, colectomy, thyroidectomy, mastectomy, hepatic resection, Nissen, bariatric surgery, TURP, gastrectomy, parathyroidectomy, exploratory laparotomy.
  • Equipment experience preferred: PEG, PEJ, PCA pumps, peritoneal drains, JP drains, hemovac, wound vac, nephrostomy tubes, ileostomy, colostomy, urostomy, surgical drains.

Important Considerations

  • Position is in a hurricane-prone area; hurricane season runs June 1 - Nov 30 (storms may occur outside this window).
  • Nurses may be assigned to an Emergency Team during storms, requiring them to stay onsite or assist with relief efforts.
  • Candidates uncomfortable with hurricane-related assignments during this season should not apply.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Active Louisiana RN license or Compact License required upon submission.
  • BLS (AHA or RQI accepted).
  • ACLS required (AHA or RQI accepted).
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM).
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification required unless working in ICU.
  • NURSYS license verification required.

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, updated annually.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start, updated monthly.
  • Sex offender search required within 30 days of start, updated monthly.
  • Education verification required if no state license.
  • Competency exam specific to specialty required annually (minimum 80%).
  • Color blind testing required for lab staff.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months indicating good health.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months; TB questionnaire if positive.
  • Immunizations or titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
  • Tdap required for select areas (ED, Pediatrics, Mother/Baby, NICU).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 - Apr 30).
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 60 days of start.
  • Fit mask testing (N95) within one year of start; onsite fit testing available if needed.

Documentation & Other Requirements

  • Current/valid driver's license or government photo ID (color copy).
  • Resume/application required with 7 years employment history and explanation for gaps.
  • Skills checklist updated annually.
  • Photo for badge (passport-style, recent, plain background).
  • Emergency preparedness checklist for hurricane season.
  • Onsite fit test authorization form if applicable.
  • COVID-19 medical or religious exemption forms if applicable.

This position requires a highly experienced Med/Surg RN with strong post-op GI and wound care skills, readiness to work in a hurricane-prone region, and full compliance with licensing, certification, and health requirements.
