Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical) - Travel/Contract

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital, Level I Trauma Center, Magnet Facility
Beds: 562 staffed beds


Position Details

  • Specialty: Medical Surgical RN
  • Shift: 3x12 hour nights (18:45 - 07:15)
  • Average Daily Census: 22 patients
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years Medical Surgical experience
  • First-timers: Not accepted
  • Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: Will float to other units within scope as needed
  • Block Scheduling: Schedule requests can be discussed with manager
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
  • License: Must have active Illinois RN license in hand
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA (RQI acceptable)
  • ACLS and PALS may be required based on unit/specialty

Required Skills & Experience

  • Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response: Telemetry (remote monitoring), Rapid Response Teams
  • Gastrointestinal Care: Colostomy care, Feeding tube care/management
  • Genitourinary/Renal: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, Renal failure care
  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Blood product administration, Central line blood draws, Peripheral line care, PICC line management, IV starts
  • Medication Administration: Heparin, Insulin, PCA
  • Neurological/Psychiatric: Spinal cord injuries
  • Orthopedic Trauma: Experience required, including surgical drains
  • Respiratory Care: CPAP/BiPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), Nasal Cannula, Non-invasive airway management, Oral suctioning, Oxygen face masks, Portable oxygen tanks, Pre/Post thoracic surgery, Tracheostomy management
  • Professional Knowledge: Isolation precautions, Wound care including Wound Vac

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Valid/current US Driver’s License or State ID
  • Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years (including SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, FACIS Level 3)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG checks within 30 days prior to start
  • Illinois-specific searches (Department of Corrections, Most Wanted, State Police Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry) within 30 days prior to start
  • Fingerprinting via Illinois Health Care Worker Registry (must be done in Illinois 3 business days prior to start)
  • Education verification (degree or transcript)
  • Primary source verification of state license and NURSYS verification
  • Competency exam required for clinical candidates
  • Badge photo (color, mid-shoulders up, plain background) due before start
  • Signed Code of Conduct and other facility-specific documents
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate provider, confirming good health and ability to perform job functions
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • TB questionnaire updated annually
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually by November 30
  • Two professional references required
  • Skills checklist required for clinical candidates

  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Scrub color: Any solid color
  • Parking: Permit required, no cost (form completed during orientation)

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)

This position is ideal for experienced Medical Surgical RNs with strong multi-specialty skills, who hold an active Illinois license and are comfortable working night shifts in a busy Level I trauma acute care hospital.
