Description

Registered Nurse (Cardiac Floor) - Wilmington, North Carolina

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: Nights, 36 hours only
Patient Ratios:

  • Surgical step down: 1:4
  • Lower acuity: 1:5-6
    Weekend Requirement: 4 weekends per 4 weeks (flexible)
    Float Requirement: Will follow unit rotation; not first to float

Job Description

  • Minimum 2 years of experience on a cardiac floor required.
  • Traveler experience required unless the candidate has more than 24 months of cardiac experience.
  • Locals accepted.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Cardiac Telemetry, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown
  • Sheath removal and management
  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Post MI care, pre/post cardiac catheterization
  • Management and titration of cardiac drips
  • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleuravac)
  • External CPAP/BIPAP, nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management

Preferred Skills

  • Arterial line management
  • Wound care/Wound Vac
  • Charge nurse experience

  • CABG, AVR, MVR, TAVR
  • Mitral Clip, LAAO (Watchman procedure)
  • VATS, Carotid endarterectomy
  • FEM-POP bypass, amputations, other vascular surgeries
  • Cardiac and thoracic surgeries
  • Post cardiac catheterization, post DCCV, post electrophysiology procedures
  • Pacemaker placements

Important Notes

  • No return to office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation.
  • Contract staff will be assigned to Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters.
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.
  • Every candidate will be interviewed before offer.

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 90 days of start (local, federal, national databases, sex offender search)
  • Education verification for highest degree earned specific to nursing profession
  • State-specific registry checks (North Carolina Healthcare Personnel Registry and Division of Medical Assistance) within 90 days of start
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (or within 30 days if past positive TB)
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) within 1 year of start
  • Immunizations and titers required: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination), TB testing (PPD, Qgold, or Tspot)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • COVID-19 vaccine no longer required for travel staff as of June 2023

Additional Competency Requirements

  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (must score 82% or higher; three attempts allowed)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Color blind testing within 1 year
  • Other certifications as applicable based on unit and specialty (e.g., CPI for ER/BH nurses, TNCC, PALS, CHEMO)

Facility Specific Documents & Training

  • Confidentiality agreement
  • Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8 hours of modules)
  • Hospital policies and acknowledgment form
  • Medication safety training and certificate of completion
  • Badge photo submission (passport style, white background, business attire)
  • Corporate ID setup and I-Learn account activation required prior to start
  • Radiation badge required for Cath Lab and related specialties (if applicable)

References & History

  • Two professional references within 3 years required for travel and acute care positions
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
  • Performance evaluations required if worked with Aya over 1 year

This position is ideal for experienced cardiac floor RNs comfortable with telemetry, stepdown care, and managing complex cardiac patients during night shifts in a fast-paced hospital environment.
