Unit and Environment
- Corrections Health Unit (PCU and Medical-Surgical Oncology units)
- Secure corrections unit environment with locked access controlled by Corrections Officers
- CO to inmate ratio: 1:2
- Nurse to patient ratio: 1:3 (PCU), 1:4-5 (Medical-Surgical)
- Float between Oncology Medical-Surgical and PCU units as needed
Experience and Skills
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- EPIC charting experience required
- Medical-Surgical/Telemetry skills
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response including dysrhythmia interpretation and unit-based telemetry monitoring
- IV insulin protocols
- Feeding tube care and management
- Pre/Post Hemodialysis and renal failure management
- Blood product administration, central/peripheral line and PICC line care, IV starts
- Heparin protocols, cardiac drip management (no titration), PCA management
- Respiratory care including CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy management
Patient Diagnoses
- Active oncology diagnoses and treatments (solid tumors, hematology)
- Oncology workup admissions
- History of cancer admitted for other reasons (surgical procedures, COPD, sepsis, abnormal labs, pneumonia)
- Non-oncology diagnoses as above
Shifts
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit needs
- 12-hour day/night rotating shifts possible, with schedule reviewed every 4 weeks (subject to staffing priorities)
Systems Utilized
- Medication system: Pyxis
- Documentation system: EPIC
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
Additional Certifications (may be required depending on unit)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) for ER/OB/Psych units
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) for L&D, Post-Partum, OB
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM)
- NIH Stroke Certification (for ICU, PCU, ED, Brain & Spine units)
- State License Verification
- NURSYS Verification (for RNs, LPN/LVNs, APs)
Competency Exams
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (required prior to start)
- Unit-Specific Competency Exam
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required within 1 year of start and annually thereafter)
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start (including FBI/BCI fingerprinting)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Education accreditation verification from accredited nursing programs
- Fingerprinting (Ohio BCI & FBI) required within 1 year of start; must be completed under specific code
- Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending
- Background acknowledgement and compliance forms must be reviewed and signed
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required
Health Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (or TB questionnaire)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titers)
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions reviewed)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (mask required if declined)
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but recommended (primary series documentation requested if available)
References and Documentation
- Two professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership)
- Employment application required (including education for nursing candidates)
