Registered Nurse - Pediatric Cardiology ICU (CVPICU)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 8 weeks


Unit & Shift Details

  • Unit: Pediatric Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (PCICU), 29-bed, Beacon Award-Winning
  • Shift: Day shifts, 4x12 hour shifts (0700-1930)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1 or 1:2 depending on acuity
  • Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule, holiday rotation
  • Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Guaranteed hours: May be cancelled one shift every 2 weeks
  • Travel pairs: Not accepted

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years Pediatric Cardiac ICU experience required
  • Experience in cardiovascular and pediatric nursing required
  • VAD (Ventricular Assist Device) experience highly preferred
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Licensure: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required

Certifications Required

  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA only
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred but not required (AHA only)

Unit Description

  • Referral center for major pediatric cardiac surgery in South Carolina
  • Patient population includes congenital heart disease of all ages
  • Common procedures: cardiac surgery, VAD, heart transplant, cardiac catheterization
  • Advanced therapies: ECMO, CRRT, complex supportive therapies
  • Pediatric palliative care available as needed
  • Staffing includes RNs, Patient Care Technicians, Unit Secretaries, Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, Pediatric Pharmacists
  • All beds are monitored

Scheduling & Local Considerations

  • Open to block scheduling at manager’s discretion
  • Local radius: 60 miles
  • Local candidates accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted at time of application and approved based on unit needs
  • Hurricane season (June-November) may require emergency response team participation

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9, E-Verify attestation)
  • Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
  • Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Background checks including SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, FACIS, and state-specific searches
  • Education verification and diploma/transcripts preferred
  • NURSYS license verification required
  • Annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required: Tdap, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • COVID vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Color blindness test required prior to start
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests required as applicable
  • Facility-specific orientation modules must be completed prior to start
  • Passport-style photo required for badge

  • The unit is a “Gold” Beacon Award-winning unit, ranked #4 in US News and #1 nationally for outcomes
  • Candidates must be prepared for potential emergency assignments during hurricane season
  • The facility uses EPIC for charting
  • Parking permit required for garage use (fee applies)
