Registered Nurse - Hematology Oncology (Night Shift)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Shift Details
- Unit: Hematology Oncology (Med Surg Unit)
- Shift: Nights (D/N shift available)
- Staffing Ratios: Goal 1:4, can be 1:5
- Scheduling: No set/blocked schedules; self-scheduling requests with final schedule balanced and posted
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday-Friday dayshift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with preceptor
- Floating: May float to other Med/Surg and Oncology units
- Weekend shifts: Variable based on unit needs
Experience & Preferences
- Med/Surg experience required
- Hematology Oncology experience preferred but not required
- ONS (Oncology Nursing Society) certification preferred
Patient Diagnoses
- Lymphoma
- Multiple Myeloma
- Acute and Chronic Leukemias
- Sickle Cell Disease
- Other non-hematologic cancers
- Benign hematology conditions
Special Procedures & Unit Focus
- Chemotherapy administration
- Blood transfusions
- IV antibiotics
- Management of oncologic emergencies (tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome)
- Insulin and heparin drips
- Strong emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
Required Skills & Competencies
- Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing
- Telemetry monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Feeding tube care and management
- IV therapy and phlebotomy
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws
- Peripheral line care and management
- PICC line management
- Starting IVs
- Computerized charting using EPIC
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Education accreditation verification from accredited nursing programs
- Transcript or diploma verification required
- Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending
- Subcontractors must complete specific background acknowledgements and fingerprinting proof
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required annually
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low titer
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions reviewed
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended
Additional Requirements
- 2 professional references required (at least 1 from a manager/director or formal leadership)
- Employment application including education verification
- Skills checklist required
- Unit-specific competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required annually)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement
- License verification within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification for RNs
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required
