Registered Nurse (RN) - Med/Surg

Location: Chicago, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Medical/Surgical (Med/Surg)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • No block scheduling
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (2 weekends per month)
  • Return to Office (RTO): Maximum 5 days, no more than 2 consecutive days; no RTO on holidays, day before/after holidays, or weekends
  • Floating: Mandatory float within scope as required by facility
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years recent acute care experience in Med/Surg
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
    • NIH Stroke Certification - required for all RNs in Med/Surg and other specified units; must be updated annually
  • Certifications Preferred:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • Locals accepted, but preferred to live within 75 miles of the facility
  • Pending licenses are NOT accepted

Required Background Checks & Verifications

  • Background check within 12 months covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Illinois Health Care Worker Registry Search (for aides and nursing assistants only; not required for RNs)
  • International background check if applicable (if candidate lived/worked internationally in past 7 years)

Required Health Documents

  • Physical exam within 12 months, signed by PA, NP, DO, or MD
  • Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) within 1 year, required annually
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within 10 years or signed declination (declination must be within 12 months)
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 12 months, updated annually; chest x-ray if positive TB history
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; booster if low titer
  • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination within 1 year
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; booster if low titer
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start, updated annually
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 - Apr 1)
  • COVID-19 vaccine NOT required as of 8/21/2025

Competency Exams (Required for starts on/after specified dates)

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (within 12 months of start)
  • Competency Exam (within 12 months of start)
  • Color Blind Testing Online (within 12 months of start)

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Mandatory completion of facility-specific HIS forms for RNs prior to start
  • Must use legal name (no nicknames) on all forms
  • Must complete all required fields as specified in forms

Additional Notes

  • References: 2 references within 2 years preferred but not required to start
  • Employment application and skills checklist required annually

This position is ideal for RNs with Med/Surg acute care experience seeking a travel contract in a Level 1 Trauma Center with night shifts and mandatory floating responsibilities.
