Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Lafayette, Louisiana
Specialty: Registered Nurse (Med/Surg, Post-Op GI and Wound Care)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Acute care Med/Surg position specializing in post-op GI and wound care.
  • Candidates must have full-time post-op unit experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required.
  • Must have completed at least one prior travel contract.

Patient Diagnoses You Will Encounter

  • Pancreatitis
  • GI bleeds
  • Bowel obstructions and perforations
  • Wound and post-op infections
  • Mass removal
  • Esophageal perforation
  • Gunshot wounds (GSW)
  • Motor vehicle collisions (MVC)
  • Diverticulitis

Special Procedures Involved

  • Pancreatectomy

  • Thyroidectomy

Equipment You Should Be Familiar With

  • PEG and PEJ tubes
  • PCA pumps
  • Various surgical drains (Per drain, JP drain, Hemovac, wound vac)
  • Nephrostomy tubes
  • Ileostomy, Colostomy, Urostomy care

Important Considerations

  • This position is in a hurricane-prone area. During hurricane season (June 1 - Nov 30), you may be assigned to an Emergency Team and expected to stay onsite or assist with relief efforts during storms.
  • Candidates not comfortable with hurricane-related assignments should not apply during this period.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Active Louisiana RN license or Compact License (must be current or in renewal process)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI) — verify with program management if unclear.

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, updated monthly
  • Sex offender search within 30 days of start, updated monthly
  • Education verification of highest level completed
  • Competency exam specific to specialty, updated annually
  • Drug screening (10-panel) within 60 days of start
  • Physical exam within 12 months indicating good health
  • Fit mask testing (N95) within 1 year of start; onsite fit testing available if needed
  • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, TB test, Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 - Apr 30)

Documentation & Other Requirements

  • Valid, current driver’s license or government-issued photo ID (color copy)
  • Resume/application with 7 years employment history and explanation of gaps
  • Skills checklist updated annually
  • Photo for badge (passport-style, recent, plain background)
