Job Description
- Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
- Teaching facility: travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
- First-time travelers accepted; local candidates not accepted.
- Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
- Floating may be required to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) at University and Methodist Hospitals.
- Staffing ratios typically 1:3-4, rarely 1:5 during emergencies.
- Unit patient population includes CVAs, hydrocephalus, brain tumors/resections, seizures, TBIs, trauma cases (shootings, stabbings, MVCs), GI surgeries, and large wound care.
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BCLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience
- Telemetry experience
- Proficient in neuro nursing
- Management of drips
- Preferred: Conscious sedation and Level 1 trauma experience
Important Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR RNs, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
- Refusal to float or meet weekend requirements may lead to contract termination.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements
Background Checks
- Must include 7 years of residence/work history
- SSN Trace, County Criminal, Statewide, National Sex Offender, FACIS Level III
- Education verification required for new travelers
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
Certifications Verification
- ACLS, BLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM as applicable
- State nursing license verification within 30 days before start
- NIH Stroke Certification required
Health Documents
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved)
- Immunizations and titers required or strongly recommended:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Seasonal Flu vaccination/documentation required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31); no declinations accepted
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
Competency Exams
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required
- Unit competency exam required
- Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent) required
Facility-Specific Requirements
- Completion of facility-specific forms and orientation packets prior to start
- Mandatory completion of 22 RRT modules for Respiratory Therapists (if applicable)
- HIPAA and confidentiality agreements required
Employment History and References
- Minimum 2 references from recent employment within 2 years
- Employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps of 30+ days
- Skills checklist within 12 months, updated annually
This position requires a flexible, experienced RN comfortable with neurological and trauma patient care in a teaching hospital setting, with multiple certifications and compliance documents up to date.
