CCU - Combination ICU (20 Beds) - West Virginia

Location: Weirton, WV
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Details

• Number of Beds: 10
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3
• Common Patient Diagnoses: Respiratory distress, post cardiac arrest, acute MI, balloon pumps, ventilated patients, patients requiring vasopressor support (no ICP monitoring)
• Charge Nurse: Yes, takes a full patient assignment
• Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, not in-house 24/7; typically scheduled from midnight to 7 PM
• Hospitalist/Intensivist Coverage: No intensivist in ICU 24/7; on-call at night; nocturnist available hospital-wide at night
• Respiratory Therapist (RT) Coverage: RT available 24/7, assigned to multiple units

Required Experience & Skills

• Minimum 3 years ICU experience
• Balloon pump experience required
• Comfortable with ventilator management and drip titration
• RNs are required to titrate drips (vasopressors, levophed, neosynephrine, epinephrine, nitroglycerin, heparin, angiomax, and others)
• Nurses must be able to troubleshoot respiratory equipment (vents, trachs, BiPAP, CPAP, Airvo) but RTs manage and administer breathing treatments
• Nurses must read and interpret telemetry strips (no telemetry techs on unit)

Certifications Required

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS

Scheduling & Shifts

• Shift: 12-hour shifts, 7 AM - 7 PM (days)
• Scheduling: 4-week schedule with staff input to create ideal schedule; final schedule confirmed after input
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (EOW)
• Holiday Requirement: May be asked to participate in holiday rotation
• Call/Standby: None
• Floating: Travelers float to any inpatient unit and are first to float

Orientation & Dress Code

• Orientation: 1 day general orientation + 1 day preceptor
• Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs

Additional Notes

• This is not a closed ICU; primary physicians manage patient care (no direct intensivist management)
• Night shifts are 12 hours
• Weekend scheduling as assigned
