OR RN - Surgical Services (Travel/Contract)
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Facility Type: Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet Hospital
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (8:30 AM - 9:00 PM), including holiday rotation
- On-call: Yes, up to 4 weekend call shifts every 4 weeks
- Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including sister units/facilities
Experience & Licensing Requirements
- Minimum Experience: 2 years strongly preferred
- First-time travelers accepted
- License: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required
- Radiation Badge required (provided by agency)
- Trauma Level: Level 1 trauma center experience preferred
- Scrub Experience: Strongly preferred
Facility Highlights
- 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
- Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to both scrub and circulate, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
- Magnet designated, academic trauma center with cutting-edge technology
- Charting system: EPIC
- Parking: Permit required for garage parking with a registration fee; additional fees may apply for other parking locations
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Local radius: 60 miles
- Locals may be accepted on a case-by-case basis
- Guaranteed hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be broken down but total no more than 1 shift
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Proof of work eligibility (I-9, E-Verify attestation)
- Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
- Social Security Card or SSN verification
- Background checks including:
- 7-year history with SSN trace, statewide, national criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
- Employment application with complete work history including PTO, contract assignments, and no unaccounted gaps
- Proof of 2 clinical references
- Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers
Certifications Required
- BLS (AHA or ARC) for all clinical staff
- ACLS (AHA only) required for specific units including Adult Critical Care, Labor & Delivery, Cath Lab, ER, ICU, Interventional Radiology, PACU, PCU (specific units), PreOp, Observation Unit
- PALS required for all Pediatric units except Pediatric OR (preferred for Peds OR)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) required except for ER RNs
- Radiation Badge required for OR, CVOR, Cath Lab, Radiation Oncology, and other specified units
- Other certifications as applicable:
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- CHEMO (Chemotherapy) for Oncology unit only
- NIH Stroke Certification for ER
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
- IV Therapy certification for select LPNs if applicable
- Certifications must be current and not expiring within 30 days of start
Competency Exams & Testing
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required as applicable
- Color Blind Testing required prior to start
- Competency exam required; Pediatric OR prefers Peds-specific exam but accepts regular OR exam if no peds experience
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam: Initial and updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Fit mask test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers required or proof of immunity:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days) or chest x-ray if positive history
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if low titer
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination
- Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if low titer
- Drug testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start, no instant tests
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30)
- COVID vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
Facility Specific Requirements
- Orientation modules must be completed prior to start; estimated 2 hours
- Clear, passport-style photo required for badge (frontal view, business casual attire)
- Radiation badge process may take 5-7 days; candidates cannot start without it
- Sterile Processing Techs have additional physical assessment and lab requirements
- All documentation must be uploaded into the facility’s system prior to start
Additional Notes
- Candidates with background hits or licensure issues require facility approval
- Walk-through (temporary) SC RN license process available for eligible candidates, faster than permanent license
- Facility approval required for all licensure and certification verifications
- Travelers must comply with all facility policies and complete all required documentation and training before starting assignment
