Job Description

  • Work in a corrections health unit specializing in Medical-Surgical Telemetry (Oncology experience preferred but not required).
  • Float to various Oncology Medical-Surgical (MS) units as needed.
  • Ensure staff safety in a secure corrections unit environment.
  • Unit is a locked corrections unit for Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections inmates.
  • Access controlled by Corrections Officers (CO).
  • CO to inmate ratio: 1:2.
  • Nurse to patient ratio: 1:3 for Progressive Care Unit (PCU), 1:4-5 for Medical-Surgical (MS).
  • Shifts may be assigned to MS or PCU.
  • Weekend shifts vary based on unit requirements.

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only (Instructor/Provider and RQI acceptable).
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit.
  • Other certifications such as PALS, NRP, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification may be required depending on unit assignment.
  • State nursing license verification required.
  • NURSYS verification required for RNs.

Experience & Skills

  • EPIC charting experience required.
  • Oncology experience preferred but not mandatory.
  • Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing skills.
  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response skills including:
    • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management.
    • Unit-based telemetry monitoring.
  • IV therapy and phlebotomy skills including blood product administration, central and peripheral line care, PICC line management, and IV starts.
  • Management of endocrine/metabolic protocols (e.g., IV insulin).
  • Gastrointestinal care including feeding tube management.
  • Renal care including pre/post hemodialysis and renal failure management.
  • Medication management including heparin protocols, cardiac drips (no titration), and PCA.
  • Respiratory care including CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), ABG interpretation, tracheostomy care, and non-invasive airway management.

Patient Population

  • Patients with active oncology diagnoses and treatments (solid tumors, hematology).
  • Oncology workup admissions.
  • Patients with history of cancer admitted for other reasons (surgical procedures, COPD, sepsis, pneumonia, abnormal labs).
  • Non-oncology diagnoses admitted for various medical reasons.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting.
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
  • Education accreditation verification required (accredited nursing programs).
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed).
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12).
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
    • TB questionnaire.
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccines or positive titers.
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable).
    • Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed).
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season.
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
  • Annual review and acknowledgment of ethics, compliance, dress code, and hand hygiene policies.
  • Competency exams required including medication test/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (with remediation process if needed).

References and Documentation

  • Two professional references required; at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.
  • Various facility-specific documents and attestations must be completed and signed.

This position requires a nurse comfortable working in a secure corrections environment with a diverse patient population including oncology and non-oncology cases, proficient in EPIC charting, and capable of managing complex medical-surgical and telemetry patients. Compliance with extensive background checks, certifications, health screenings, and competency exams is mandatory.
