Unit and Shift Details

  • 16 James Hematology Oncology - Nights (Med Surg Unit)
  • Day/Night shifts available
  • Staffing ratios goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
  • Weekends variable based on unit needs
  • No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests are submitted and balanced
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift orientation
    • Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with preceptor
  • Floating to other Med/Surg and Oncology units

Experience and Certification Preferences

  • Med/Surg experience required
  • Hematology Oncology experience preferred but not required
  • ONS (Oncology Nursing Society) certification preferred (additional pay)
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS

Patient Diagnoses

  • Lymphoma
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • Acute and Chronic Leukemias
  • Sickle Cell Disease
  • Other non-hematologic cancers
  • Other benign hematology conditions

Special Procedures / Unit Details

  • Chemotherapy administration
  • Blood transfusions
  • IV antibiotics
  • Management of oncologic emergencies (tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome)
  • Insulin drips
  • Heparin drips
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention

Required Skills

  • Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing
  • Telemetry monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • IV therapy and phlebotomy
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line blood draws
  • Peripheral line care and management
  • PICC line management
  • Starting IVs

Charting System

  • EPIC computerized charting

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start (including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide, sex offender, MVR if driving)
  • FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Education accreditation verification from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, CASN)
  • Transcript or diploma verification required
  • Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive
  • TB questionnaire required annually in lieu of TB test
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low titer
  • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions reviewed
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31); mask required if declined
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended; proof of primary vaccination collected if available

Competency Exams

  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exam required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for all RNs within 1 year of start and updated annually (exceptions apply)
  • Remediation process in place for failed EKG exams

References and Documentation

  • Two professional references required; at least one from a manager/director or formal leadership
  • Employment application required including education details
  • Skills checklist required

Facility Policies and Training

  • Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required
  • Confidential Fraud, Waste, Abuse, and Compliance Reporting training and acknowledgment required annually
  • Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and signed annually
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized hematology oncology med-surg unit with a focus on complex patient care, including chemotherapy and oncologic emergencies, with a supportive orientation and flexible scheduling.
