Registered Nurse (ED RN) - Portland, Oregon

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Emergency Department Registered Nurse
  • Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (1700-0530 and 1900-0730)
  • Patient Ratios: 1:3-4
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years nursing experience
  • Travel Experience: At least 1 year travel experience required if recent EPIC experience
  • Weekend Requirement: Yes
  • Call Requirement: No
  • Floating: Yes, within hospital only (no floating to sister hospitals)
  • Block Schedule: Not open to block scheduling unless otherwise stated
  • Locals Accepted: Yes
  • Pending License: Accepted if application submitted and received by licensing board
  • Return to Origin (RTO) Restrictions: Maximum 1 week

Required Skills & Certifications

  • EPIC charting experience
  • Trauma experience
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (AHA Provider only)
    • ACLS (AHA Provider only)
    • PALS (AHA Provider only)
    • TNCC (preferred)
  • Additional certifications:
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) preferred
    • Stroke CEUs required for Emergency Department staff

Job Responsibilities

  • Assess patient needs, plan and coordinate interventions and consultations
  • Perform procedures including moderate & deep sedation, ultrasound, intubation, cardioversion, D&Cs, sexual assault exams, CPR, and imminent deliveries
  • Care for patients with trauma, acute stroke, STEMI, psychosis/psychological emergencies, sepsis, and complex medical histories including substance abuse

Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

Background Checks & Verifications

  • Background check within 6 months prior to start (Advanced Reporting - OHSU package)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days prior to start
  • Education verification (primary source) required for RNs
  • National Sex Offender Search within 30 days prior to start
  • Work history verification for last 7 years (or last 2 employers)
  • Two manager/supervisor references from last 24 months required (charge RN references only if direct supervisor)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam (Aya standard: within 1 year of start)
  • Fit mask test within 1 year prior to start (N95 or equivalent)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine or signed declination
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 12 months
  • TB questionnaire required
  • Immunity or vaccination for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (full series or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Drug testing: Negative 10-panel with methamphetamines listed, within 3 months prior to start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination (deadline 12/01/2025)
  • COVID-19 vaccination strongly recommended; declination requires mask use and signed form

  • Professional Appearance Policy acknowledgment
  • Job description acknowledgment
  • Completion of Compass training modules prior to start (Information Privacy, Integrity, Harassment Prevention, Glucometer 2025, Omnicell Nurse Patient Care Training, Vocera Badge Training for inpatient RNs)
  • Medication override test provided during orientation (not required before start)
  • Respirator clearance and fit testing (onsite fit testing available if needed)
  • Advanced Screening Release Authorization form required for background check initiation
  • Compliance availability required up to start date (no planned unavailability without prior notice)

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must present a valid government-issued photo ID on the first day to obtain facility ID badge
  • Candidates with a background hit must complete a criminal history statement; no open court cases allowed
  • Candidates with gaps over 30 days since last OHSU assignment require updated background checks and references
  • Return candidates with gaps over 60 days must provide a reference from previous OHSU manager
  • Stroke CEUs and NIH Stroke Certification required annually for Emergency Department staff
  • Candidates must complete all required documentation and training prior to start to ensure badge issuance on day one

This position is ideal for experienced Emergency Department RNs with EPIC and trauma experience seeking a travel contract in a Level I Trauma Center teaching hospital environment.
