Job Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)
- Location: Newark, New Jersey
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Primary Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Additional Units: May float to Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and possibly other units based on skill set and hospital needs (floating must be confirmed with traveler)
- Schedule: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
- Hours: Client will accept 36 or 48 hours per week
- Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:2 or higher (confirm with traveler)
- Unit Size: 19 beds
- Charting System: EPIC
- Scrub Color: Navy Blue
- First-time travelers: Not accepted
Experience & Skills Required
- Minimum 2+ years of PICU critical care experience required
- At least 1 year of cardiac experience strongly preferred (must be documented on skills checklist)
- Experience with Medtronic pacemakers and telemetry monitoring required
- Experience with BIPAP/CPAP, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, and tracheostomies required
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support): Required (AHA, RQI, or instructor cards accepted; COCs accepted as placeholder)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Required (AHA, RQI, or instructor cards accepted; COCs accepted as placeholder)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for all adult critical care units; confirm if required for PICU
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Preferred but not required
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit and role; confirm with program coordinator
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background Checks: Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-level searches (statewide, federal, sex offender, etc.)
- Drug Screening: 10-panel urine drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, MDMA, methamphetamine, methadone, opiates, oxycodone, PCP)
- Health Documents:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
- Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
- Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
- Immunizations or immunity proof for Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
- Fit test and respiratory medical clearance if job tasks require respirator use
- Latex allergy questionnaire if applicable
- Competency Exams: Medication test/pharmacology, dysrhythmia/EKG competency, color blind testing (if applicable), and pass/fail testing (EKG/medication) required within specified timeframes
- References: Two references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
- Employment History: 7 years of work history required, with verification of at least 1 year prior to start date (New Jersey state requirement)
- Skills Checklist: Must be completed and updated annually, documenting required skills and experience
Additional Requirements
- Must complete facility-specific floating policy for every new assignment or site transfer
- Must complete annual education sign-off and review facility-specific orientation materials
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (online and in-person portions)
- Pass/fail testing with remediation process in place for clinical assessments
- Must comply with all facility-specific policies and documentation requirements prior to start
This position is ideal for experienced PICU RNs with strong cardiac care skills who are comfortable floating to related pediatric units and meet all certification and compliance requirements.
