Unit and Float Details
- Float pool position
- Units include:
- Med-Surg/Discharge (12 bed unit)
- Med-Surg/Telemetry float for four 23 bed units
- Med-Surg float 4 bed unit
- Hospital is a 163 bed Level II trauma center
Work Schedule
- Weekend coverage every other weekend required
- Shift hours:
- 8-hour shifts: 40 hours/week guaranteed
- 10-hour shifts: 40 hours/week guaranteed
- 12-hour shifts: 36 hours/week guaranteed, with an additional 4 hours scheduled for breaks and lunches (total 40 hours/week)

- 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio
Systems Used
- Medication system: Pyxis
- Documentation system: Cerner
Orientation
- 64 hours orientation
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)*
* CPI certification must be issued within the last 12 months and is required for Behavioral Health and ER specialties.
Licensure
- Alaska State Nursing License required
- Out-of-state compact licenses may be used with facility approval and proof of Alaska application
Health and Compliance Requirements
- Background check within 90 days of start (includes SS trace and county searches for last 7 years)
- Negative 10-panel drug test within 30 days of start (no instant tests accepted)
- Physical exam (renewed annually)
- Fit mask test with approved facility masks within 1 year of start (must be renewed annually; cannot be completed onsite)
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (one adult dose)
- Negative TB test (QGOLD, TSPOT, or PPD within 1 year) or chest x-ray if positive
- TB questionnaire annually
- Rubeola (Measles) titer or 2 vaccines
- Mumps titer or 2 vaccines
- Rubella titer or 2 vaccines
- Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or facility-specific declination
- Varicella titer or 2 vaccines
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 - Apr 1)
- COVID vaccination preferred but not required
Additional Requirements
- Clinical skills checklist
- Two clinical references
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam
- General competency exam
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (for ER specialty)
- Personal data and confidentiality forms must be completed prior to start
- Facility-specific documents and orientation handbook acknowledgment required
- Photo for badge highly preferred but not mandatory
Notes
- Floating to multiple Med-Surg and Tele units, including discharge lounge
- Position requires weekend coverage every other weekend
- CPI certification courses are not offered onsite; must be obtained prior to start
- Orientation is comprehensive (64 hours) to prepare for float pool responsibilities
