Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (OR RN) - Charleston, South Carolina
Position Details
- Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)

- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (Nights, 6:30 PM - 7:00 AM)
- On-call: No
- Weekend Requirement: Up to one weekend shift every 4 weeks
- Holiday Requirement: Must work at least one holiday period (Christmas Dec 24-26, New Year's Dec 31-Jan 1)
- Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including sister units/facilities
Experience & Licensing Requirements
- Experience: 2 years strongly preferred; first-time travelers accepted
- License: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- Radiation Badge (provided by agency)
- Preferred Experience: Scrub experience in OR
Facility Highlights
- Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
- 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, Robotics
- Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to scrub and circulate, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
- Total staffed beds: 820
- Charting system: EPIC
- Scrub color provided
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Local radius: 60 miles
- Locals accepted on a case-by-case basis
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
Important Seasonal Note
- During hurricane season (June-November, peak in August-September), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams. Travelers should consider this before accepting or extending assignments.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
Background Checks
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- Searches include SSN trace, county/state/national criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
Licensure & Verification
- Primary source verification of active, unencumbered SC RN license or compact license
- NURSYS verification required for all RNs
- License hits must be approved by facility
- Temporary "walk-through" licensure process available for SC RN license (24-48 business hours) if no background issues
Certifications
- BLS: AHA or ARC certification required for all clinical staff; must be valid beyond 30 days from start
- ACLS: Required for adult critical care units, labor & delivery, cath lab, ER, ICU, interventional radiology, PACU, PCU, pre-op, observation units; not required for pediatric units or CVOR techs
- PALS: Required for pediatric units except Pediatric OR; preferred for Pediatric OR; not required for adult ER
- TNCC: Required as applicable; not required for ER RNs
- Radiation Badge: Required for OR, CVOR, cath lab, radiation oncology, and other specified units; must be obtained before starting patient care
- Other certifications as applicable (e.g., NRP, CHEMO, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification)
Competency Exams
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required as applicable
- OR competency exam required; pediatric OR prefers pediatric-specific exam but accepts regular OR exam if no pediatric experience
- Color blindness testing required prior to start
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
- Fit test for N95 mask (specific models) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form required
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days; if positive, documentation of chest x-ray required
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters may be needed for low titers
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Drug screen: 10-panel urine drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
- Seasonal flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations; documentation must be uploaded by deadline
- COVID-19 vaccines highly preferred but not required; declination form required if not vaccinated
Facility Specific Requirements
- Completion of orientation modules (approx. 2 hours) prior to start; must be done on a computer, not a phone
- Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into facility system
- Passport-style badge photo required before start (frontal view, solid light background, business attire)
- Physical assessment form required for sterile processing techs
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Employment application must include all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
- Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers required
