Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Acute care experience required: minimum 2 years
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Work every other holiday and weekend (2 out of 3 holidays required)
  • Patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2
  • Float to multiple units including all ICUs, PACU, ED (for ICU holding patients), and all IMC units
  • No block scheduling
  • Locals accepted

Patient Population

  • Fresh open heart surgery patients (CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR)
  • Ventilated patients
  • Patients with chest tubes and lumbar drains
  • Chronic and acute renal failure patients

Required Skills and Experience

  • Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) experience with fresh open hearts
  • Assist with BiPAP and CPAP
  • Chest tube insertion/removal assistance
  • Proficient with 12 lead EKG, Post Op Open Heart Recovery
  • Experience with Swan-Ganz catheters, FloTrac, Temporary Pacers, Arterial lines, ventilators, chest tubes
  • Experience with devices such as Impella, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) using Prismaflex
  • Surgical ICU (SICU) experience may be considered with initial CVICU training

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA required; RQI and instructor cards acceptable
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): AHA required; RQI and instructor cards acceptable
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification: Required for adult critical care specialties, ED, Telemetry, MS/Tele, Cath Lab, and stroke centers
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (confirm with program coordinator)

Competencies and Testing

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 72 hours of signing
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for critical care and telemetry units
  • Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication knowledge with remediation process in place
  • Color blindness testing within 1 year of start (if job tasks require color discrimination)

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
  • Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen)
  • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • Respirator medical clearance and fit testing required prior to start (on-site fit testing mandatory)
  • Latex allergy screening questionnaire if job tasks require glove use
  • Immunizations or immunity proof required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap

Background and Employment History

  • Criminal background check required within 30 days of start
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history required
  • Work history verification required for New Jersey candidates (minimum 1 year prior to start, allowing 30-day gaps)
  • Two professional references required, including at least one managerial reference

Additional Information

  • Must complete facility-specific floating policy for every new assignment
  • Must be available to work 2 out of 3 holidays during assignment
  • Required to complete annual education sign-offs and facility-specific training modules
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (online and in-person training)
