Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Acute care experience required: minimum 2 years
- First-time travelers accepted
- Work every other holiday and weekend (2 of 3 holidays required)
- Patient ratio: 1:1-2
- Float to multiple units including all ICUs, PACU, ED (for ICU holding patients), and all IMC units
- No block scheduling
- Locals accepted
- Patient mix includes fresh open heart surgeries, ventilated patients, chest tubes, lumbar drains, chronic and acute renal failure
Required Skills & Experience
- CVICU experience with fresh open hearts (CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR)
- Assist with BiPAP and CPAP, chest tube insertion/removal
- Proficient with 12 lead EKG, Post Op Open Heart Recovery
- Experience with Swan-Ganz catheters, FloTrac, Temporary Pacers, A-lines, ventilators, chest tubes
- Experience with devices such as Impella, IABP, and CRRT using Prismaflex
- SICU experience may be considered with initial CVICU training
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA required; RQI and instructor cards acceptable
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): AHA required for all adult critical care units, ED, RN Manager, MS/Tele, Outpatient Surgery, PCU, L&D
- NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale): Required for adult critical care specialties, ED, Tele, MS/Tele, Cath Lab, Labor and Delivery units
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO) – confirm with program coordinator if applicable
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background Check: Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including aliases and all locations worked/lived in past 7 years
- Drug Screen: 10-panel urine drug screen within 30 days of start
- Health Documents:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray as per facility protocol
- Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
- Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption annually
- Hepatitis B immunity or vaccination compliance
- MMR, Varicella, Rubella, Hepatitis B titers or vaccination proof
- Fit test and respiratory medical clearance as required
- Latex allergy screening questionnaire if applicable
- Competency Exams: Medication test, Dysrhythmia/EKG competency, and other required clinical competencies must be completed within 72 hours of signing contract
- References: Two references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
- Employment History: 7 years of work history required, with verification of at least 1 year prior to start date (NJ state requirement)
Additional Information
- Must complete floating policy for every new assignment or site transfer
- Must be available to work 2 out of 3 holidays during assignment
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (online and in-person training)
- Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication exams with remediation process in place
- Annual education sign-off and facility-specific orientation required
- Compliance with facility-specific CEU requirements (Stroke, Trauma, Med Surg, etc.)
Summary
This travel RN contract in New Brunswick, NJ requires strong acute care and CVICU experience, flexibility to float across multiple critical care units, and compliance with extensive certification, health, and competency requirements. The assignment is approximately 13 weeks long with every other weekend and holiday shifts. First-time travelers and local candidates are welcome.
