Job Description

  • Acute care nursing position in Medical/Surgical Overflow area
  • Care for acute care inpatients requiring medical/surgical, telemetry, or IMC level of care
  • Manage antiarrhythmia drips without titration
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms and conduct NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) assessments as ordered
  • Ratios approximately 1:4-5+
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and 2 out of 3 winter holidays
  • No block scheduling; floating within skillset when not needed on home unit
  • First-time travelers accepted; locals accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of acute care experience required
  • Required certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIH Stroke Certification

Required Certifications & Competencies

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for Medical/Surgical, Telemetry, IMC, Adult Critical Care, ED, PCU, L&D, and Outpatient Surgery. Certificates expiring within a month of start require renewal confirmation.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support): Required for all RNs and many tech roles. Certificates expiring within a month of start require renewal confirmation.
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for adult critical care specialties, ED, Telemetry, MS/Tele, Cath Lab, and stroke center units. Must be updated annually.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Required for Pediatric ER, Pediatric Acute Care, ED, Outpatient Surgery, PACU, PICU, and Pediatrics units.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Required for L&D, Mother-Baby, NICU, Nursery, Antepartum, and Special Care Nursery.
  • Chemotherapy Certification: ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate required for adult chemo; APHON certification for pediatric chemo.
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam: Required for all RNs and LPNs; must be completed within 72 hours of signing contract.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam: Required for ED, MS/Tele, Telemetry, PCU, Observation Units, IMC, Step-Down, adult critical care units, PACU, Cath Lab, and Educators.
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB): Required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs. Online portion must be completed by hire date; in-person portion within 14 days of start.
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication): Pharmacology and Basic EKG exams required for clinical staff in specified units. Candidates have 3 attempts to pass.

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • Every other weekend and holidays (2 out of 3 winter holidays) required
  • Floating within skillset when not needed on home unit
  • No block scheduling
  • Must have availability for half of winter holidays
  • Must interpret cardiac rhythms and conduct NIHSS assessments

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of acute care experience required
  • Ability to float within skillset
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced acute care environment

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks: Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-level searches
  • Drug Screening: 10-panel urine drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Health Documents:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as per facility requirements
    • Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
    • Immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
    • Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
    • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance as applicable
    • Color blindness exam if job tasks require color discrimination
  • Licensing: Valid RN license with legal name matching documentation; NURSYS verification as applicable
  • References: Two references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
  • Employment History: 7 years of work history required, with verification of at least 1 year prior to start date (New Jersey state requirement)
  • Skills Checklist: Must be completed and updated annually

Additional Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Completion of floating policy acknowledgment for every new assignment
  • Annual education sign-off and review of facility-specific training materials
  • Vendor medical clearance form if history of positive TB
  • Completion of online and in-person training modules for Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) if applicable
  • Compliance with RWJBarnabas Health influenza vaccination policy and attestation
  • Completion of required CEUs (Continuing Education Units) for Med Surg, Stroke, Trauma, and other specialty areas as applicable
