Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Facility Level: Level IV NICU (accepting Level III NICU travelers)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Must have availability for half of the winter holidays.
  • Patient Ratios:
    • NICU: 1 nurse to 2 patients
    • SCN: 1 nurse to 3-4 patients
  • RN must have 2+ years of current Level III NICU experience.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Schedule includes every other weekend and holiday shifts.
  • Certifications required: BLS, NRP; PALS preferred.
  • Floating assignments to NBN, SCN, Pediatrics, and PICU as appropriate.
  • No block scheduling.
  • Local candidates accepted.
  • Patient mix: 21-bed NICU and 16-bed SCN.
  • Will not attend high-risk deliveries.
  • Required skills and experience with:
    • EPIC electronic health record system
    • Respiratory support: CPAP, HFNC, ETT, Oscillators, Jet ventilation
    • Glucose monitoring and insulin administration
    • Breastfeeding support and feedings
    • Placement/management of oral, nasogastric, and nasojejunal tubes
    • Sepsis workups
    • Vascular access: UAC, UVC, arterial lines, central lines
    • IV vasopressor administration
    • Criticool and patient transport preferred

Required Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA required; RQI and instructor cards acceptable.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): AHA required; accepted for NICU, L&D, Mother-Baby, Nursery, Antepartum, and Special Care Nursery.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Preferred but not required for NICU; required for PICU and pediatric units.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Not required for NICU.
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam: Required for all RNs; must be completed within 72 hours of signing contract.
  • Competency Exams (including Dysrhythmia/EKG): Required as applicable; must be completed within 72 hours of signing.
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication): Pharmacology and EKG exams required for clinical staff in relevant units.
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB): Required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (not NICU).
  • Other certifications: Chemotherapy certification not required for NICU.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray: Required within 3 months of start; specific protocols for positive or past positive TB history.
  • Physical Exam: Required within 12 months; must clear candidate to perform essential job functions and be free of communicable disease.
  • Drug Screening: 10-panel urine drug screen required within 30 days of start.
  • Flu Vaccination or Exemption: Mandatory annually during flu season; medical or religious exemptions require attestation and mask-wearing during flu season.
  • Fit Test: On-site fit testing mandatory; facial hair must be shaved unless accommodation approved.
  • Latex Allergy Questionnaire: Required if job tasks involve glove use; accommodations handled case-by-case.
  • Respiratory Medical Clearance: Required prior to start; must be updated annually.

Background & Employment History

  • Criminal background check required within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-level searches.
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history required.
  • Work history verification required for New Jersey candidates (minimum 1 year prior to start).
  • Two references required within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference.

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Must complete floating policy acknowledgment for every new assignment.
  • Annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgment required prior to start.
  • Required to complete vendor medical clearance if history of positive TB.
  • Must complete annual education and competency requirements as per facility policy.

Additional Notes

  • No block scheduling; flexible floating assignments within pediatric and neonatal units.
  • Locals accepted, first-time travelers welcome.
  • Patient care does not include high-risk deliveries.
  • Experience with EPIC and advanced neonatal respiratory support equipment is essential.

This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs with strong neonatal critical care skills seeking a travel/contract role in a Level IV NICU setting with a reputable healthcare system in New Jersey.
