Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Opportunity

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina

Job Description

  • Unit: Orthopedic-focused med-surg unit with orthopedic, neuro spine, med-surg, and post-surgical patients
  • Patient Census: Average 37 patients daily, 39 beds/rooms
  • Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 - 07:15)
  • Hours: Option for 36 or 48 hours per week; no overtime until after 48 hours if 48-hour option accepted
  • Patient Diagnoses: Includes orthopedic and spine patients; COVID patients are cared for on all units unless in ICU
  • Unit Environment: Fast-paced, requires strong pain management skills
  • Ratios: Typically 5-6:1, can flex to 7:1 in extreme cases
  • Float Requirement: Required to float to other med-surg units as needed based on census
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required; if calling out on a weekend, time must be made up on a weekend
  • Scheduling: Block scheduling options available (e.g., Fri/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon)
  • Time Off: No holiday requests time off (RTO) approved; max 7 days RTO allowed for auto offer
  • Return to Office (RTO): Not allowed after booking and cannot be worked out onsite; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience with orthopedic experience required
  • IV start and telemetry skills required
  • Must have EPIC experience (unit accepts first-time travelers with EPIC experience)
  • Certifications: BCLS and NIH Stroke Certification required
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start

Preferred Experience & Certifications

  • ACLS
  • Charge nurse experience
  • Level I trauma experience

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background checks within 6 months required (SSN trace, county, nationwide, sex offender searches)
  • Education verification for highest degree earned (RNs can start with pending verification if license is valid)
  • Drug testing within 6 months required (9-panel or instant acceptable)
  • Immunizations and health documents required including:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive)
    • Rubeola (Measles) titer or 2 vaccines
    • Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella per standard requirements
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Physical exam and medical release forms required per Aya standards
  • Color blind test within 1 year required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required with passing score of 82% or higher (3 attempts max)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required for new contracts
  • Various facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and photo for badge

Orientation & Training

  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation modules prior to start (up to 8 hours)
  • Must complete Medication Safety training and submit certificate of completion
  • Must complete Corporate ID setup and login to I-Learn within 24 hours of receiving credentials
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training required if assigned to ER or Behavioral Health units (not specified for this unit)

Additional Notes

  • No holiday time off allowed
  • Must pass EKG testing within 72 hours of start
  • Fast-paced environment requiring strong clinical skills and flexibility
  • Floating to other med-surg units is mandatory to meet staffing needs
