Job Summary: Registered Nurse - New Brunswick, New Jersey (Travel/Contract)
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Specialty & Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)
- Minimum 2 years acute care experience required
- Minimum 1 year Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience required
- Must have well-rounded Stepdown or PCU experience
Prior Travel Experience
- First-time travelers accepted (no prior travel experience required)
Work Environment & Schedule
- True float pool: will float between MS/Tele, PCU, and ED holding units
- Patient Ratios: 1:4+ for PCU; 1:5 for MS/Tele (confirm with traveler)
- Every other weekend and holiday shifts required
- No block scheduling
- Locals accepted
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification (required for adult critical care, ED, Tele, MS/Tele, Cath Lab, Labor and Delivery units)
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO) — confirm with program coordinator
Required Skills
- EKG interpretation and management
- Renal failure management
- Care for CVAs (strokes)
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)
- Chest tubes management
- CPAP/BIPAP use
- ABGs (arterial blood gases)
- Tracheostomies
- Wound vacs
Documentation & Compliance Requirements
- Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
- 2 references within last 2 years (at least one managerial)
- Background check within 30 days of start (including aliases, all locations worked/lived in past 7 years)
- Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen)
- Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol
- Annual influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required
- Respiratory medical clearance and on-site fit test mandatory prior to start
- Color blindness testing if job tasks require color discrimination
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required within 72 hours of signing
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 72 hours of signing
- Competency exam required within 72 hours of signing
- Completion of facility-specific floating policy acknowledgment
- Annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgment
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (online and in-person training)
- Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication knowledge with remediation process if needed

- Scrub color: Navy Blue
- Candidates must be prepared to float across multiple units
- Must have ACLS, BLS, and NIH Stroke certifications current and valid
- Facility requires proof of name change if legal name differs on documents
- CEUs (Continuing Education Units) required for various specialties and must be uploaded with correct expiration dates
- RWJBarnabas Health is considered one employer; documentation within 30 days of prior RWJ assignment may be accepted for site transfers with less than 30-day gap
