Job Summary: Registered Nurse - New Brunswick, New Jersey (Travel/Contract)

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Specialty & Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse
  • Minimum 2 years acute care experience
  • Minimum 1 year Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience
  • Must have well-rounded Stepdown or PCU experience

Prior Travel Experience

  • First-time travelers accepted (no prior travel experience required)

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Patient Ratios: 1:4+ for PCU; 1:5 for MS/Telemetry (confirm with traveler)
  • True float pool: will float between MS/Tele, PCU, and ED holding areas
  • Every other weekend and holiday shifts required
  • No block scheduling
  • Locals accepted

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for adult critical care, ED, Tele, MS/Tele, Cath Lab, Labor & Delivery units)
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (confirm with program coordinator)

Required Skills

  • EKG interpretation and management
  • Renal failure management
  • Care for CVAs (strokes)
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)
  • Chest tubes management
  • CPAP/BIPAP use
  • Arterial Blood Gases (ABGs)

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • I9 form and government-issued photo ID (Driver’s license required within 48 hours of signing)
  • E-Verify clearance
  • Criminal background check within 30 days of start (including aliases, all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, sex offender, nationwide, federal, and other checks)
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
  • 2 professional references within last 2 years (one managerial)
  • Work history verification (minimum 1 year prior to start date, with gaps ≤30 days)
  • Skills checklist (updated annually)
  • Pass/fail testing including pharmacology and EKG competency exams (3 attempts max)
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam (within 72 hours of signing)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (within 72 hours of signing)
  • Color blind testing (within 1 year of start)
  • Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen)
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption annually (with deadlines)
  • Respiratory medical clearance and fit test (mandatory on-site fit testing)
  • Latex allergy questionnaire (if applicable)
  • Annual education sign-off and facility-specific orientation requirements
  • Vendor medical clearance form if history of positive TB
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (online and in-person portions)
  • Other certifications as applicable (e.g., CHEMO, PALS, NRP) depending on unit assignment

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: Navy Blue
  • Must complete floating policy for every new assignment or site transfer
  • Must comply with facility-specific education and attestation requirements (e.g., elder abuse education, stroke and trauma CEUs)
  • Candidates with name changes must provide proof and include all names in background checks
  • Candidates switching between RWJ sites with ≤30-day gap may use prior documentation if within required timeframes

This position is ideal for RNs with solid acute care and PCU experience who are flexible to float across multiple units and meet comprehensive certification and compliance requirements.
