Job Summary: Registered Nurse - New Brunswick, New Jersey (Travel/Contract)

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2+ years acute care experience
  • Minimum 1+ year PCU (Progressive Care Unit) experience
  • Must have well-rounded Stepdown or PCU experience
  • Prior travel experience not required (first-time travelers accepted)

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Patient Ratios: 1:4+ for PCU; 1:5 for MS/Telemetry (confirm with traveler)
  • True float pool: will float between MS/Tele, PCU, and ED holding areas
  • Every other weekend and holiday shifts required
  • No block scheduling
  • Locals accepted

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (confirm with program coordinator)

Required Skills

  • EKG interpretation and management
  • Management of renal failure, CVAs (strokes), TBIs (traumatic brain injuries)
  • Care involving chest tubes, CPAP/BIPAP, ABGs (arterial blood gases), tracheostomies, wound vacs

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Check: Criminal background check within 30 days of start; must include all aliases and locations worked/lived in past 7 years; no open cases allowed at start
  • Drug Screen: 10-panel urine drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, MDMA, methamphetamine, methadone, opiates, oxycodone, PCP)
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions, free of communicable disease
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (mandatory during flu season)
    • Immunizations or proof of immunity for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
    • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance if job tasks require respirator use
    • Latex allergy questionnaire if applicable
  • Competency Exams:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for ED, MS/Tele, PCU, Observation Units, IMC, Step-Down, adult critical care units, PACU, Cath Lab, Educators)
    • Color blind testing (if job tasks require color discrimination)
  • Pass/Fail Testing: Pharmacology and basic EKG exams required for clinical staff; remediation and retake policies apply
  • References: Two references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
  • Employment History: Resume or application with 7 years of work history; New Jersey candidates require verification of at least 1 year prior to start with no gaps over 30 days

  • Scrub color: Navy Blue
  • Must complete facility-specific floating policy for every new assignment or site transfer
  • Required to complete annual education sign-off and other facility-specific training modules
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (includes online and in-person training)
  • Some units may require additional certifications such as PALS, NRP, CHEMO, EFM, depending on assignment
  • Candidates must bring all required documentation to orientation and first day of work
