Job Summary: Registered Nurse - New Brunswick, New Jersey (Travel/Contract)

Experience Requirements

  • Acute Care Experience: Minimum 2+ years
  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Experience: Minimum 1+ year
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (first-time travelers accepted)

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Patient Ratios:
    • PCU: 1:4+
    • Medical-Surgical/Telemetry (MS/Tele): 1:5 (confirm with traveler)
  • True float pool: Will float between MS/Tele, PCU, and ED holding areas
  • Schedule: Every other weekend and holidays; no block scheduling
  • Locals accepted
  • Scrub color: Navy Blue

Required Skills

  • EKG interpretation and management
  • Renal failure management
  • Care for CVAs (strokes) and TBIs (traumatic brain injuries)
  • Chest tubes management
  • CPAP/BIPAP use
  • ABGs (arterial blood gases)
  • Tracheostomies
  • Wound vacs

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required
  • BLS (Basic Life Support): Required
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for adult critical care, MS/Tele, ED, Telemetry, and stroke center units
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO) — confirm with program coordinator if applicable.

Competency & Testing Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam
  • Pass/Fail testing for EKG and medication knowledge
  • Color Blind Testing (if job tasks require)
  • Competency exams must be completed within 72 hours of signing and within 12 months of start date
  • Failed testing policies apply (cancellation after 3rd failed attempt)

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 30 days of start
  • Must include all aliases and locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Drug screen (10-panel) within 30 days of start
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
  • Work history verification (minimum 1 year prior to start, with gaps ≤30 days)
  • Two references within last 2 years (one managerial)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol
  • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (mandatory during flu season)
  • Hepatitis B immunity or vaccination compliance
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunity or vaccination
  • Varicella immunity or vaccination
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination within past 10 years
  • Drug testing (urine) within 30 days of start
  • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance if job tasks require respirator use
  • Latex allergy screening questionnaire

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Must complete floating policy acknowledgment for every new assignment
  • Annual education sign-off and review of facility-specific education materials
  • Vendor medical clearance form if history of positive TB
  • Iron Temple online training required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (cost applies)
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (online and in-person portions)
  • Stroke and trauma CEUs required for applicable units
  • Safety manual acknowledgment including OSHA, HIPAA, and Joint Commission annual training

This position offers a dynamic float pool role requiring well-rounded stepdown or PCU experience, with a focus on acute care skills and certifications. Candidates must be prepared to meet comprehensive compliance, health, and competency requirements prior to start.
