Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Seattle, Washington


Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Specialty & Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Required years of CVICU experience: 2.5 years
  • Must have current CVICU experience within the last 6 months
  • Cardiac Surgical experience is required
  • Prior travel experience: Not required (first-time travelers accepted with strong experience)
  • Float pool assignment: Float required

Patient Diagnoses

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Pre/post Cath Lab and IR procedures
  • Fresh Open Heart Surgery

Special Procedures & Skills Required

  • CABG, Open Heart Surgery (OHS), AAA, Valvular Repairs
  • IABP, Impella, VADs, Pacemakers, Epicardial Pacer Management
  • CRRT/Dialysis
  • Hemodynamic Monitoring
  • Breathing Treatments, Chest Tube Set-up/Care, CPAP/BiPAP, Trach Care, Ventilators
  • High Frequency Ventilators, Procedure Sedation
  • RSI (Rapid Sequence Intubation) Drugs
  • Blood/Blood Products Administration
  • Cardioversion / Defibrillation, Cooling/Warming
  • Obtain 12 Lead EKG
  • ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)

Work Settings

  • Neuro Intensive Care Unit
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit (Preferred)

Cardiac Monitoring and Emergency Response

  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Multi-system organ failure management (Required)

Cardiovascular Skills (Required/Prioritized)

  • ECMO (Preferred)
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve implantation/replacement (TAVI/TAVR) (Preferred)
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) (Required)
  • Post Cardiac Surgery care (directly from OR and not directly from OR)
  • Pre/Post Cardiac Cath/intervention
  • Pulmonary Artery Line/Swan Ganz monitoring
  • Sheath Removal (Required)

Endocrine/Metabolic

  • IV insulin protocols (Required)

Renal/Genitourinary

  • CVVHD/CRRT (Required)
  • Chronic/Acute Renal failure (Preferred)

IV Therapy (Required)

  • Accessing Ports
  • Arterial line management
  • Blood Product Administration
  • Central line care/management
  • PICC line management
  • Starting IVs

Medications (Required)

  • Continuous IV sedation
  • Procedural Sedation Administration
  • Titrate Cardiac drips
  • Titrate Vasoactive drips

Neurological (Required/Preferred)

  • Hypothermia protocol/Arctic Sun (Required)
  • CVA/Acute Stroke management (Preferred)

Respiratory/Thoracic (Required)

  • Assist with Chest Tube Insertion/Removal
  • Care of Ventilated Patient
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
  • Interpretation of ABGs
  • Suctioning (ETT, NT)
  • Ventilator Management

Professional Topics and Skills (Required/Preferred)

  • Infection Prevention, Isolation Precautions/Use of PPE (Required)
  • Surgical Wounds with drains/Wound Vac (Required)
  • Phlebotomy (Preferred)

Special Equipment

  • Sheath removal
  • Vasopressors

Orientation & Staffing

  • 3 days orientation with validated skills for some competencies
  • Staffing ratio: 1:1-2
  • Scrubs: Navy blue

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
  • CRRT Prismaflex certification
  • Fresh open heart surgery experience and IABP skills required

Additional Requirements

  • Must have active compact license (honored at all Swedish facilities)
  • Float Policy Acknowledgement required (may be required to float to other Providence facilities within reasonable distance)
  • Physical Exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit Mask test (annual, travel only)
  • Immunizations and health screenings including:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination)
    • Negative TB or Chest X-Ray (annual update required)
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) or positive titers
    • Hepatitis B vaccination or declination
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
    • Flu vaccine or declination (seasonal)
    • COVID vaccine or declination
  • Drug Testing: 10 Panel Drug Screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Background checks and verifications as per state and facility requirements
  • References: Minimum 2 references covering 1 year of employment within last 3 years in comparable specialty/setting
  • Employment application covering at least last 5 years

Charting System

  • EPIC (Preferred)

This position requires a highly skilled CVICU RN with strong cardiac surgical experience and the ability to float within the hospital system. The unit has unseasoned staff, so strong travelers are needed. First-time travelers with strong experience are welcome.
