Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Specialty: Medical-Surgical with Oncology focus
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Position on a Medical-Surgical/Oncology unit
- Night shift
- Patient ratio target: 1:6
- Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift
- Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations (e.g., inpatient holding in the ED)
- Every other weekend required
- Storm Team/Hurricane Team participation required; may be called to work during catastrophic events, mass casualty, or disaster
- Daily census approximately 42 patients; ratios may increase during high census periods
- Patients primarily have general medical-surgical diagnoses with oncology history, including chemotherapy/biotherapy administration (IV, PO, injection)
- Common patient diagnoses: AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Pain, Overdose, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, FTT, Diabetic foot ulcers, Heparin drips
- Must attend monthly staff meetings
- Shifts called out must be made up
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in specialty (Medical-Surgical)
- Experience in inpatient setting required
- Skills required:
- Med/Surg nursing
- Colostomy care
- Accessing ports
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draw
- Peripheral line care/management
- PICC line management
- Heparin and insulin administration
- Surgical drains
- Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- Nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
- Isolation precautions
- Wound care and Wound Vac management
- Certifications required:
- Oncology Certification (ONC) — must be able to administer chemotherapy if needed
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification
- Charge nurse experience
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)
Orientation & Uniform
- Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts)
- Scrubs: Navy blue and white
Systems Used
- PYXIS (medication system)
- EPIC (electronic health record)
- SBAR (communication tool)
Testing & Competency Requirements
- Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency testing prior to start (1st attempt within 72 hours)
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
- Color blind test within 1 year required
- Monthly attendance at staff meetings expected
Additional Requirements & Notes
- No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation and Do Not Rehire status
- Must participate in Storm/Hurricane Team assignments and disaster response as needed
- Must submit a passport-style photo for badge creation prior to start
- Must complete various background checks and verifications (education, licensure, etc.)
- Required health documents include:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Immunizations/titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Drug testing within 6 months of start
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
- Must complete facility-specific orientation modules including Medication Safety and Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation
- Must comply with hospital policies and confidentiality agreements
- Must complete required certifications and training as per facility standards
Summary
This is a night shift travel Registered Nurse position in Wilmington, NC, on a Medical-Surgical/Oncology unit requiring at least 2 years of Med/Surg inpatient experience and Oncology certification. The role involves care of complex oncology patients, chemotherapy administration, and participation in disaster response teams. First-time travelers are welcome. The contract length is approximately 13 weeks with every other weekend and call requirements. Orientation and competency testing are mandatory prior to starting.
