Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Specialty: Registered Nurse (PICU)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Patient Ratios: Average 1:2
- Experience Required: Minimum 3 years in specialty (highest requirement)
- First-time Travelers: Accepted
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- On-call: Not required
- Floating: Must float within pediatric units as needed (Pediatric ED, NNICU, inpatient departments, psych unit) within scope of practice
- Block Scheduling: Not accommodated
- Pending License: Accepted
- Guaranteed Hours: Yes
- Special Requirements: Experience in cardiac critical care preferred; CRRT and ECMO certifications preferred
Certifications Required
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Preferred: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., NRP for NICU, TNCC for ER)
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check (updated annually)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
- Foreign equivalency education evaluation for internationally educated RNs
- Education verification including official transcripts
- Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
- Employment application with 7-year work history and no gaps over 90 days
- Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
- Attestation of prior radiation exposure if applicable to certain units
Competency Requirements
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (85% passing score)
- Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024 or later)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for ICU and telemetry units)
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months, updated annually (3M N95 preferred)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation
- Annual TB questionnaire
- Immunizations or titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (or declination within 1 year)
- Varicella
- Tdap vaccination within 10 years highly preferred for pediatric specialties (declination accepted)
- 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
- COVID vaccine series preferred
Facility Specific Training & Documents
- Compliance checklist and various mandatory training modules including:
- Stroke education (not required for PICU)
- CLABSI prevention
- Preventing pressure injury
- Language services
- CAUTI education (not required for PICU)
- Patient transportation with oxygen
- Suicide risk and environmental assessment
- Pyxis ES MedStation training
- Baxter pump interoperability
- Patient bedside rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER)
- Ventricular assist device awareness
- Blood administration (annual update required)
- New employee orientation
- 21st Century Cures Act training (required for RNs except Home Health)
- ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
- eCart training (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
- Chaperone policy training (required if gap >6 months or updated module)
- EPIC testing or training required for RNs with EPIC experience
Additional Notes
- Floating to various pediatric units is expected; travelers should coordinate with Charge RN for orientation when floating outside PICU
- RTO (Return to Office) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval
- Candidates must be prepared to complete all required training and compliance documentation prior to or at orientation
This position is ideal for experienced PICU RNs with pediatric critical care skills, who are comfortable floating within pediatric units and meeting comprehensive compliance and health requirements. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
