Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Opportunity
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Specialty: Registered Nurse (Med/Surg with Oncology focus)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
- Night shift with target nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6.
- Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations (e.g., inpatient holding in the ED).
- Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift.
- Every other weekend required.
- Contract staff expected to participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team assignments during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings required.
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of experience in specialty (Med/Surg).
- Experience in inpatient setting required.
- Skills required:
- Med/Surg nursing
- Colostomy care
- Accessing ports
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws
- Peripheral line care/management
- PICC line management
- Heparin and insulin administration
- Management of surgical drains, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- Nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
- Isolation precautions
- Wound care including Wound Vac
- Must have Oncology Certification (ONC) and be able to administer chemotherapy if needed.
- BLS certification required.
- Prior travel experience not required; first-time travelers accepted.
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification
- Charge nurse experience
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)
Patient Diagnoses & Unit Details
- Patient diagnoses include AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, pain management, overdose, malignant neoplasms, acute renal failure, encephalopathy, failure to thrive, diabetic foot ulcers, heparin drips.
- Daily census approximately 42 patients; ratios may increase during high census periods.
- Chemotherapy/biotherapy administration via IV, PO, or injection.
Orientation & Uniform
- Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
- Scrubs: Navy blue and white.
Systems Used
- PYXIS (medication system)
- EPIC (electronic health record)
- SBAR (communication tool)
Compliance & Testing Requirements
- Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency testing within 72 hours of start (minimum 82% score required).
- Color blind test within 1 year required.
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required.
- Background check within 6 months required.
- Drug screening within 6 months required.
- Various health documents required including:
- Negative TB or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation)
- Immunizations/titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.
- Physical exam required per travel agency standards (not client-specific).
Additional Notes
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start.
- Contract staff may be preassigned to different units as needed.
- Shifts called out must be made up.
- Photo ID and badge photo required prior to start.
- Must complete required facility-specific orientation and training modules prior to start.
- Expected to comply with hospital policies including confidentiality and medication safety.
This position is ideal for Med/Surg RNs with oncology experience looking for a travel contract in North Carolina with night shifts and a dynamic patient population. Prior travel experience is not mandatory, making it accessible for first-time travel nurses.
