Job Opportunity: Certified Surgical First Assistant

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan

Position Details

  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Shift: 4x10 hour day shifts (07:00 - 17:30)
  • Call Requirements:
    • 2 call shifts per week
    • 2 weekend call shifts every 6 weeks
  • Holiday Requirements: Per unit rotation
  • Floating Requirements: None
  • Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week

Qualifications & Skills

  • Certified Surgical First Assistant (CST - Surgical Tech) with experience in:
    • Neuro
    • Vascular
    • Orthopedic
    • Outpatient procedures
  • Experience with XI DaVinci surgical system is required
  • Must have an active state license by start date (pending state license accepted if active by start)

Certifications (AHA only unless otherwise noted)

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure)
  • CHEMO (Chemotherapy)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for all RNs)
  • Tech Cert Verification - National (as applicable per profession)
  • State License Verification (as applicable)
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication) for Monitor Techs (if applicable)

Background & Health Requirements

  • Background check covering last 7 years and all states lived/worked in, required within 90 days of start
  • Education verification or copy of diploma/transcripts required
  • Physical exam required
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (2-step PPD or Qgold accepted; T-Spots not accepted)
  • TB questionnaire required prior to start and annually thereafter
  • Immunizations or titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Negative 12-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, cannabinoids, MDMA, methamphetamines, buprenorphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, cocaine, methadone, tramadol, benzodiazepines, morphine/opiate)
  • Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required prior to start and documentation on file by 12/15 (flu season October–May)
  • COVID vaccine exemption allowed with medical or religious documentation

  • Scrub color is provided
  • Charting system: CERNER
  • Facility requires a clear, passport-style photo for badge
  • Candidates must complete facility-specific modules prior to start (approx. 8-10 hours) and are paid for this time
  • Modules are not required for candidates who have worked with the facility within the past year and are returning
  • Confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement required prior to start

This position is ideal for surgical first assistants with at least 1 year of experience who are comfortable with neuro, vascular, ortho, and outpatient procedures, and who have experience with the XI DaVinci system. The role requires flexibility for call and weekend shifts and adherence to comprehensive health and background screening protocols.
