Job Description
- First Time Travelers Accepted
- Travelers expected to work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
- Teaching facility: travel nurses must agree to precepting and/or having students shadow them.
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required with resources provided.
- Staffing ratio: 1:5
- Unit: Medical PCU with almost ICU level acuity, multiple cardiac drips, stable vents, multi-organ failure, liver failure, pulmonary cases.
- Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at these facilities except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
Required Experience and Skills
- Minimum 2 years experience in PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown
- Skills required:
- Titration of cardiac drips
- Starting IVs
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Charge nurse experience
Certifications Required
- ACLS (AHA only, RQI acceptable)
- BLS (AHA only, RQI acceptable)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM) — verify per unit.
Licensure
- Valid RN license for Indiana with online verification within 30 days of start date.
Health and Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date.
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required).
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
- Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Seasonal flu vaccination/documentation required for 2025-26 flu season; no declinations accepted.
- Color blind exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with minimum 100% score.
Additional Requirements
- Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment within 2 years; references must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above.
- Current employment application with full work history; gaps of 30+ days must be explained.
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually.
- Completion of facility-specific orientation, compliance, and safety forms prior to start.
- Completion of mandatory training modules (22 modules) prior to orientation with proof of completion required.
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam and unit competency exam required.
Prior Travel Experience
- No explicit requirement for prior travel experience; first-time travelers accepted.
This position requires a highly skilled RN comfortable with high-acuity PCU/Stepdown care, cardiac drip management, and charge nurse duties in a teaching hospital environment. Candidates must be willing to precept students and float between units as needed.
